Transit Oriented Development (tod) is a model of urban and regional planning that promotes the concentration of areas with medium-high density, functional mix and pedestrian and bicycle accessibility around public transport stations. It was launched in the 1990s in the United States and then spread throughout the world. It is mainly applied on an urban scale, but it can also be applied on a metropolitan or regional scale, expressing its potential more fully. In Italy, Metropolitan cities, which are responsible for transport and mobility planning, can promote this approach. This article, starting from an analysis of metropolitan plans, presents the cases of Bologna, Milan and Turin, which have given attention to this model, and proposes some questions for a research agenda.
