An appanage is for a skilled prince a real opportunity to build his own career, but also the fortune of his descendants. In addition, an appanage allows to acquire a title that can be transferred to the heirs, transforming a cadet – and even a naturalized «bastard» – into the progenitor of a new branch of the dynasty of origin.

Keywords: Appanage; Savoy; Dukes of Nemours; Counts of Tenda.
