This paper focuses on the relationship between young people and volunteering, reflecting on how young people perceive volunteering and how they situate themselves in a context of solidarity. The study is based on research carried out in the area of the metropolitan city of Florence, which traditionally stands out on the national scene for the richness and vitality of volunteering. 407 secondary school students were involved. In order to obtain as detailed and broad a picture as possible, it was decided to use a number of research methods that made it possible to study three dimensions: the definition of one’s own experience and idea of volunteering; the motivations and recipients of the act of helping; the representations of volunteering, even in the absence of direct experience.

Keywords: young people; volunteering; solidarity; identity; perceptions; representations.
