The paper analyzes the descriptions of modern art works, that are found in the volume dedicated to Sicily – Voyage pittoresque, ou description des Royaumes de Naples et de Sicile – by Jean-Claude Richard de Saint-Non, published between 1781 and 1786. It also examines what is now recognized as its source: the report from his travel to Sicily – Voyage en Sicile – by Dominique Vivant-Denon, published in 1788
