The paper revisits the historiographical debate on the Allied invasion of Sicily in 1943, through the unpublished correspondence of admiral Pietro Barone, commander of the Italian Royal Navy on the island. This correspondence allows to reconstruct the operations involving the withdrawal of 75,000 Italian soldiers and military equipment to Calabria.
