Design of Production Systems

Marco Garetti

Design of Production Systems

The book has been conceived as a basic platform for understanding how industrial production systems are made and how they work, together with the guidelines for their planning on an average base. First, the text introduces the different types of production systems with different profiles of classification, afterwards, it illustrates the design criteria of systems for process production and for discrete production. Lastly, the economic principles of industrial production systems are then briefly presented.

Info about e-books

This book has been developed based on the content of the lessons of the course Design and Management of Production Systems, which is offered to the students of the Master of Science (Laurea Magistrale) in Mechanical Engineering at Politecnico di Milano.
The book covers the first part of the course contents related to the design of production systems, i.e. to the planning of facilities that are required both for process production and discrete manufacturing.
The book has been conceived as a basic platform for understanding how industrial production systems are made and how they work, together with the guidelines for their sizing on an average base.
First, the text introduces the different types of production systems with different profiles of classification, afterwards, it illustrates the design criteria of systems for process production and for discrete production (separately for manufacturing and assembly systems). Lastly, the economic principles of industrial production systems are briefly presented.

Marco Garetti, is full professor of Industrial Technology at Politecnico di Milano, School of Engineering, Department of Management, Economics and Industrial Engineering. He is co-director of the Executive Master on Management of Industrial Maintenance, managed by MIP Politecnico di Milano and the University of Bergamo. He currently teaches two courses: Design and Management of Production Systems and Maintenance Management. He is member of the scientific institutions IFIP, IFAC and member of the editorial board of the Int. Journal of PLM and of the Int. Journal Production Planning&Control. He is author or co-author of 8 books and about 200 papers.
