This article examines the events and consequences of a political alliance that has played a very important role in Italian politics: the pact between Berlusconi and 192 Lega Nord. After analysing Lega Nord’s origin and further developments, the author concentrates on its turning point in 1994, when Lega Nord and Forza Italia formed the alliance that, amid ups and downs, separations and reunions, is still alive today. Both political forces dissociate themselves from the traditional political class. This dislike is underlined by multiple violations that both Berlusconi and Bossi make with regards to the rules of language and practices of the old politics. Moreover the author argues that the odd alliance with Berlusconi means that the Lega is yet to succeed, after a decade, to institutionalise as a government force, without incurring in the risk to either lose electoral consensus or to become an appendix of Forza Italia.
