Depression is frequent in the elderly and it is worth being considered in the light of contemporary thinking on dying. In Switzerland, changes in thinking have led to tolerance of assisted suicide. To allow the subject access to death in order to end pain and suffering - such is the paradox of assistance to suicide as practised in Switzerland. The impact on families and healthcare workers, of easy access to suicide, might be traumatic. As therapists, what ethically acceptable point of view must we assume when confronted with such situations?
