The paper’s aim is to verify if and how it is possible nowadays to deal with the perspective of periphery in areas where buildings are extremely diffused and people very mobile. For a long period we used a centre-periphery scheme that well summarised distinct and conflicting lifestyle and social qualities. That scheme is not any more appropriate. Such weakness is not a good reason for going toward a pure subjective construction of periphery. There still are few and general categories to survey the spatial hierarchies of dwelling. Four categories are envisaged: spatial morphology, institutions, motility, and social aggregations. Such categories, variably combined, identify new spaces, not yet named and studied.

Keywords: Periphery, motility, institutions, relationships, spatial forms
