If the realization of production and consumption systems aiming at reconciling economic and environmental aspects is coming to the fore as important objective for managers and policy makers at the global level, few is still known about the competences and knowledge necessary for firms to reach this goal. Based on interviews in the wood-furniture industry in the Veneto region, this exploratory analysis identifies three typologies of environmental competences - technical, administrative and strategic - and three ways through which firms may achieve them - developing them internally, interacting with external firms or institutions or by hiring specific professional figures. Moreover, the article proposes an analysis of organizations that offer environmental competences in the Veneto region, including universities,consultants and service companies, based on the efficacy of their offer, as it is perceived by managers and industry experts. Finally, it discusses the results and suggest policy implications to improve the offer of environmental competences.
