Generally, when we think of a democratic form of life, we think of a political regime hosting institutions, rules, collective choices, alternative political interpretations of the public interest. My thesis is that this framework is faithful but, at the same time, fundamentally incomplete. One of the distinctive traits of a democracy is given by the extent and the density of its public space, in which democratic freedom is exerted. The public space is a social space, and not institutional. The crucial issue is the alignment or misalignment between the social space and the institutional space. Many deficits of contemporary democracies emerge when citizens’ voices in the public space do not find correspondence or find a weak correspondence in the institutional space
