Franco died on November 20, 1975 and TVE could, gradually, participate in the transition to democracy. The article offers a synthesis of the main changes which the advent of democracy implied for Televisión Española. In the first years of the democratic transition, TVE were being the vehicle for new cultural values and styles. The historical series were viewed as the ideal tool for the adaptation of what could be considered as the national heritage to the formats of mass culture.
