Reflections on the history and the identity of places - This essay discuss some hypotheses recently proposed in Italy on the issue of the identities of places and on related issues and concepts, such as landscape, myths, current and emerging value systems, and the place names. A community settled in a place adapts to its original characteristics and gives the place a meaning and therefore an identity that is rooted in the distinct and unique characteristics of the place. This identity changes as the needs for the community to survive change. Therefore any attempt to "freeze" the characteristics of a place is destined to fail.
