Contemporary reflection about consciousness stresses the so called qualia problem, characterized as the "hard problem" of consciousness. Although the relevance of the qualia problem for philosophical issues such as physicalism and the nature of the psychophysical nexus should not be underestimated, it is surprising that the problem of self-consciousness has, by comparison, been largely neglected. In this paper, using as starting point Pietro Perconti’s L’autocoscienza. Che cosa è, come funziona, a cosa serve, I argue that the study of human self-consciousness addresses philo- sophical puzzles as difficult and relevant as those addressed by the study of subjective experience.

Keywords: Physicalism, Psychophysical Nexus, Qualia, Self-Consciousness, Subjective Experience.
