This essay starts from the dialectic tension between the individual and the world in the Romantic period, a tension which is highlighted by the importance given to human sentiment in the literature of this period. In a similar fashion, every therapeutic encounter shows the same search for mediation between the patient and the world s/he lives in, and the same importance is given to the emotional dimension of the person. It is in this context that body psychotherapy - represented here in the person and works of Alexander Lowen - appears as a modern successor to the original Romantic striving for "being at home" in the world. The appendix inquires into the theme of the human heart as center of the person in Romantic literature and in today’s cardiology.
