In this article, the author analyzes the theory of local signs developed by H. Lotze and C. Stumpf’s criticism of it. Moreover, the author shows how Stumpf’s criticism of the theory of local signs is strictly linked to a criticism of Kant’s metaphysics of space. Finally, the author addresses the connection between the criticism of the leading Kantian paradigm and Stumpf’s refinement of the Brentanian notions of dependent and independent psychical content.
