The paper has the objective of assessing different experiences in using knowledge in two forms of industrial organizations: Marshallian Industrial Districts (IDs) and Technological Clusters (TCs). The analysis is undertaken with constant reference to the cognitive basis of decision-making processes of agents operating in industrial districts and in technological clusters. The concept of knowledge has a strong cognitivist meaning and does not correspond to the concept of information. At a more deep insight it appears that IDs and TCs have specific forms of knowledge. Differences between tacit knowledge and codified one are here discussed with a particular attention to the productive and social networks operating in IDs and TCs. The ID’s knowledge essentially derives from already local existing human capital, while knowledge in TCs has an exogenous origin.
