The Atlas is a novelty in the panorama of historiography concerning Revolutionary and Napoleonic Italy, in that it reflects the radical simplification of its political map and the profound changes it underwent in administration, culture and society. The republican and monarchical phases of this transformation, embracing the years 1796- 1811, are viewed as a unitary process, involving the rise of a modern political culture as well as the introduction of new political practices. A further feature of the period is the spread of a civic religion and of a new concept of patriotism. Another issue addressed by the Atlas is the role of the Jewish Question, a significant element in the construction of modernity.
