During the end of the 16th century and throughout the 17th, Castile developed a monetary policy based on continuous currency changes and a considerable minting of copper coin which, paradoxically, was coupled with a period of stability in the silver coin. This policy is at the basis of the serious financial problems and im¬balances of the kingdom’s economy. Two main issues arise here: first, determining the origin of this process and, second, investigating the way kings and counsellors justified it and interpreted its effects. In order to explore these aspects this research focuses on the analyses of the published monetary legislation which will allow approaching the current political thinking at the time. In addition, it will be also possible to discuss the content of monetary laws and the extent these influenced aspects such as justice, private and public credit or fiscality.
