In this paper the author reflects on some of the functions of defensive pathological or-ganizations, which may favour an impasse in the analytic process. The idea of pathological organization in Kleinian authors is reviewed in the light of recent developments. It focuses on the active but unconscious construction of a special object, the "frozen object" that cools the structure away from the feelings and keeps its qualities almost unalterable. A clinical vignette is provided to illustrate the analysis of this type of object.
