Fear and hunger for the future. “Man, says Hobbes, hungry also for future hunger, surpasses in rapacity and cruelty wolves, bears and serpents, which are not rapa-cious except by hunger and become cruel only if wounded, by as much as swords and muskets surpass the weapons of beasts, horns, teeth and quills”. Future hun-ger is something more and different from hope. Being hungry for future hunger suggests to us that man thinks continuously and anxiously about tomorrow: he plans it. Modern man is anxious to create a world of prostheses, of artificiality to exorcise his fears regarding the present. Hobbes also reminds us that man’s for-midable propensity to build an artificial world through language does not make it better, it only makes it more powerful. It is the era of the anthropocene
