Nel 1934, con l’istituzione della New York City Housing Authority nell’ambito delle politiche economiche inaugurate dal New Deal rooseveltiano, la riforma abitativa invocata da associazioni femminili e organizzazioni filantropiche all’inizio del Novecento, trova una prima formalizzazione attraverso l’intervento federale sul terreno dell’edilizia pubblica. L’articolo osserva il contributo di un numero di amministratrici, tecniche e riformatrici nella definizione dei lineamenti del public housing federale, nella codificazione di una disciplina e nella costruzione di un dibattito pubblico sulla casa economica a New York durante gli anni ’30. Il coinvolgimento istituzionale nell’elaborazione di standard e programmi, nella definizione di modelli e nella disseminazione di esperienze e politiche avviate in Europa durante gli anni ’20, mettono in luce un aspetto inedito del New Deal, rimasto sullo sfondo del racconto istituzionale
