A history of homosexuality and organized psychoanalysis - . In the 1950s, psychoanalytic attitudes of organized psychoanalysis toward homosexuality could be reasonably characterized as hostile. First there was a transition from Freud’s early views of homosexuality as immature to later post-Freudian theories that pathologized same-sex attractions and behavior. Following the 1973 decision of the American Psychiatric Association to remove homosexuality from the DSM-II, homosexuality is now more commonly regarded as a normal variant of human sexuality. The history of psychoanalytic attitudes toward homosexuality reinforces the impression that psychoanalytic theories cannot be divorced from the political, cultural, and personal contexts in which they are formulated. This history also shows that analysts can take positions that either facilitate or obstruct tolerance and acceptance.

The paradigm of maternal seduction: historical remarks on a freudian concept - This paper discusses the problems of definition of seduction theory in the Freudian corpus. Through a detailed analysis of the texts, the authors piece together the interrelations of theories, trying to illustrate their multiple survivals in psychoanalysis. In addition, the implications of the theories’ theoretical drifts and ruptures are considered. A reconstruction of the original paradigm of maternal sexuality, which will be silently forgotten, is attempted. Through Jean Laplanche’s work, the different elements of seduction theory are discussed, also referring to the misunderstanding of the fundamental Freudian discovery of unconscious sexuality in certain areas of psychoanalysis.

Translation: requirement and possibility of a text - The fact that translation, another impossible profession, may be a construction of the original is illustratively highlighted by psychoanalysis, which has a peculiar way of examining the relationship that man has with language and languages. Freud, in addition to practicing translation and insistently using it as a metaphor, came to propose it as a model of memory and psychic functioning, thus hypothesizing the unconscious as untranslated and untranslatable, yet incessantly retranslated. In the manner of Galton’s "composite portraits" or "generic images", the superimposition of different translations of Freud’s work into different languages - in their oscillation between ethnocentrisms and "experience of the foreign - between recentering and decentering - contributes to a concrete representation of the abstraction of sexual unconscious, the discovery of the eccentric aspect of every individuality. In this sense, translation could constitute not only a requirement, but also a possibility of the Freudian canon.

Introduction to the italian edition of tilmann moser’s 1974 book years of apprenticeship on the couch: fragments of my psychoanalysis - The introduction to the 1975 Italian edition of Tilmann Moser’s 1974 book Years of Apprenticeship on the Couch: Fragments of My Psychoanalysis (New York: Urizen Books, 1977. With a letter by Heinz Kohut) is reprinted. This introduction is preceded by an editorial note by Pier Francesco Galli in which Moser’s "self-revelation" is critically seen as an anticipation of the "discovery" of the technique of self-disclosure that became fashionable in psychoanalysis since the 1990s.

Again on responsibility in psychiatry - After the sentence of Nov. 14, 2007 (no. 10795/2008) of the Italian Court, in which a psychiatrist was judged guilty of manslaughter because a patient committed homicide (see E. Pozzi, "A note on responsibility in psychiatric practice". Psicoterapia e Scienze Umane, 2008, XLII, 2: 219-223), several Italian psychiatrists reacted to defend their professional role. However, further psychiatrists, nurses, and even a general practitioner were sentenced guilty for homicides or suicides committed by patients; a psychiatrist was judged guilty because a patient, who was not coming to the clinic since several months, severely injured a young girl. Various legal suits are reviewed, the concept of "patient’s custody" and the role of guidelines and governmental recommendations are discussed. Psychiatry should inform and document, within a co-constructed therapeutic relationship, what is deemed appropriate, sharing risks and benefits, and implementing good practices within environmental safeguards.
