The journal was founded in 1972 by Sergio Erba and Pierluigi Sommaruga with the aim of making psychoanalytical resources available everywhere that the tackling and curing of psychic and relational suffering is undertaken. It also sought to launch a process of information, promotion, research, experimentation and debate.Since the 1990s the journal has largely geared its contents towards a reflection and theorizing of the experiences it has accrued whilst managing a relational therapy training school and a centre of clinical psychoanalysis open to the public. Based on its long experience, and the many successes it has enjoyed, Il Ruolo Terapeuticocontinues to pursue its initial project, that of providing relationship-support operators with psychoanalytical training. Each edition is structured along the following lines: an editorial on the up-to-date themes of psychoanalytical ethics, politics, culture and trends; the "Spaziozero" column that publishes reviews and critiques relative to the "Movimento per una psicanalisi laica" (Movement for Lay Psychoanalysis); an article, usually theoretic in nature, authored by someone from outside of Il Ruolo Terapeutico group; a clinically-based article by an external or internal author; an article summarising a supervisory clinical session with comments and criticisms; a column open to readers' comments, contributions and letters; a series of columns by regular authors, each of which covers, from a psychoanalytical viewpoint, and in a continuous and systematic way, elements of theory, literature, clinical aspects, current socio-political themes etc.
