The aim is to single out some important and promising themes within its wider and very rich research agenda, by stressing particularly: a) the widening of the issues and of the specific topics examined: from the early enquiries dealing almost exclusively with the performing arts and the market for visual art works, to the study of the broader subject represented by the cultural industries, up to the emergence of the even more extensive sphere of the creative industries; b) the recognition of a series of peculiarities, typical but not necessary exclusive of the artistic and cultural goods, together with the identification of their consequences for the definition of the demand and supply functions for these goods; c) the main features of (and justifications for) the public support of the arts; d) the impact that cultural economics has had and could have on the development of economic theory and policies. Title: Economia della cultura e sviluppo locale Abstract: Economia della cultura e sviluppo locale (by Giancarlo Cor?, Riccardo Dalla Torre) - ABSTRACT: Aim of this article is to analyse virtuous relationships between cultural activity and economic growth, particularly at urban level. Recognising that by too much time concepts of culture and economics have belonged to far worlds of meanings, we estimate worthwhile to recall several reasons to look today at cultural policies among the most important strategies for local development in the global economy. Using up-to-date statistical data on cultural economics, the article shows relevance of culture activities and employment in the modern economies. The operational concept of cultural district has recovered from industrial economics, but it?s used in new meanings and institutional perspectives to design a wide integrated strategy of local development. After a review of economic literature considering cultural districts as important concept to understand economic change and growth, this article analysed various experience of cultural strategies at urban level in United States, Europe and Italy. Final remarks underline bearing of cultural strategies in the evolution of Italian economy, not just to shift from manufacture toward tourism-cultural specializations, but also to feed local industrial innovation processes with creative resources. In fact, whereas economic trend increase, democracy support turns to be strengthened (Dalton 2005). In this study, on the base of Eurostat and European World Values Survey Integrated? (1999-2002) data, the conceptual dimensions of democracy support in twenty four consolidated UE democracies are analyzed. Adopting Easton?s (1965; 1975) theoretical approach the impact that economic factors produce on democracy support dimensions has been defined. The principal results show that i) democracy support analysis should be based on the whole range of the conceptual dimensions of democracy support, ii) the economic perspective allows us to explain specific support namely, confidence in institutions, support for political authorities and democratic principles- but not diffuse support that is, political community support.
