The paper analyses the strengths and weaknesses of Social Network Analysis approach in the olive oil market. The research addresses issues of three segments of high quality olive oils: popular extra virgin olive oil, pdo/pgi extra virgin olive oils, and finally, the "100% Italian olive oil". The analysis results show several aspects. The extra virgin olive oil market is highly polarized. There are large industrial companies with national products and other smes with regional products. While large enterprises have an intensive distribution in all grocery shops, in the distributions of smes the situation is much more complex. Some smes have a very strong sales organization, but fail to have similar market shares. Conversely, other small businesses, even if they have a low level of distribution, are able to gain market share more high. The analysis of sales by the sna approach remains a useful tool for smes which need to rationalize their presence in the grocery sector. Finally, the analysis shows segments of the market (pdo, pgi, bio, etc.) where smes may be able to compete with large industrial firms. It stars from presentation of the models of analysis of customers portfolios in literature. As second step it contains a bivariate model for study the dynamic of takings of farms, and, as third step, it applies the model to a sample of farms. The main results is that a great variation of individual purchase of costumers can occurs, also when the total level of farm takings presents small positive or negative changes. It suggests that farms have to implement differentiate strategies to the customers following different behaviour of buying. During the period 1990-2009, there was a strong decrease of Italian farms with cattle, pigs, sheep, goats, horses, poultry and rabbits. Except in the case of pigs, there was a reduction also in terms of animals but its percentage value is smaller, indicating a general phenomenon of production concentration. Regarding the Italian buffalo industry, by contrast, both farms (33%) and animals (317%) have increased and the number of regions involved in this kind of activity has grown from 4 (1980) to 19 (nowadays), while the provinces have increased from 8 to 84. The Campania region has always held the leadership of the sector; in 2009, the number of buffalo farms in Campania represented the 55.5% of the Italian value and the share of buffalos, reared in the region, was 71.6%. In addition, from 1990 to 2009, the average number of buffalos per farm almost tripled (from 56.1 to 161.9). At national level, the analogous index increased from 40.1 to 125.6. In order to study the evolution of some structural features and technologies, the analysis focused on the province of Salerno and, in particular, on the above mentioned area around the river Sele; therefore, a survey was carried out in that district by administering a questionnaire to n. 100 entrepreneurs of the sector, chosen with a non-probability quota sampling. Only 7% of the buffalo farms in the province of Salerno have received incentives within the measure 4.8 of the por Campania 2000-2006; after 16 months from the first call of the measure 121 of the psr, buffalo farms? applications are only 4.0% of the total. That is why it seemed necessary to examine whether the assessment factors of the two measures were and are compatible with the requirements of farmers and farms of the sector we are studying and whether investments planned for farm modernization by those measures were and are compatible with the needs of such industry; therefore, it was administered a questionnaire on the factors of assessment used by the two measures to 20 privileged witnesses. Through a structured technique for dealing with complex decisions, the Analytic Hierarchy Process (ahp), a specific weight was attributed to each factor of assessment in terms of its importance and according to the preferences expressed by the actors interviewed. The weight values resulting from the analysis are closer to those used for the por than to those used for the psr. The incentive scheme, based on capital contribution (40-60%), was indicated by farmers as the main impediment to the use of resources for farm modernization by buffalo farms, as it was and is more suitable for firms with a greater economic dimension. It is, therefore, desirable to also introduce interest subsidies with certain maximum rates paid by farmers. It should also be carefully evaluated the convenience of using different assessment factors for the various sectors of the regional agriculture, in order to better compare the applications among each other, make ranks and provide that investments go in the direction of the actual and urgent needs for the modernization of the different production processes that exist in the Campania region. Wine is one of the main agroalimentary products for Italian export. From wine export depends Italian balance of trade. In this context, the study aims to identify the role of quality wine, which is strongly linked to the geographical location. In fact, this relation seems to be a strong tool in favour of international competition. To this purpose we will describe the multifunctional role of wine growing in a specific area, the Collio, in Italy. Then we will analyse the chosen data set. The data were collected by quality wine producers that are partner of a Consortium. The Consortium safeguards and attests the quality of wine production. Finally, in order to study the data we used descriptive statistics and the twostep cluster analysis technique of spss?. The use of twostep analysis represented a first exploratory application of appropriate statistical techniques to study the relationship among some variables. This technique alongside models of wine producers behaviour permits the analyst to explore wine production segmentation by describing different types of wine producers strategies. Each group was characterised by common behavioural features, which we have outlined below. By observing the clusters of wine producers, we noted that: i) group "1": it was the largest; it was characterized by wine producers which used little or enough promotion, that encouraged the regional Consortium creation and had low regional market for their products (max 25%); ii) group "2": it was characterized by little or enough promotion; some of the wine producers of this group supported the regional Consortium creation, while others were not likely to encouraged it; it was characterized by middle-high regional market quota (more than 25%); iii) group "3": it was the smallest; its wine producers used a lot promotion; there was not a homogeneous support in favour of regional Consortium creation; regional market quota was low (max 25%); iv) group "4": it was similar to group "1", but there was an important difference as regards regional Consortium, in fact, it did not encouraged its creation; it had low regional market quota (max 25%). The information we collected was sufficient to construct a market segmentation model. This type of examination seems to be very useful to wine producers. In fact, it give them the opportunity to understand the strategies of their competitors. Undoubtedly, the data collected allowed us to analyse the role of local territory and the importance of local identity to typical products. Such analysis has become increasingly important for the wine sector, in which there is a specific institution - the Consortium - that has the duty to guarantee and promote mark guaranteeing quality. The Consortium gives wine producers the opportunity to increase the knowledge of consumers about the wine quality. From the data collected we observed the importance of Consortium to wine producers. At the same time, it is generally acknowledged that it is fundamental for wineries to promote local territory to increase the value of its products. Nevertheless, only bigger wine producers hope for the development of territorial brand and the cooperation among several stakeholders. Currently, the processed tomatoes chain is characterized by a deep restructuring process affected by the reform of the cmo, and its introduction of the Single Farm Payment and the increasingly fierce competition in price determined by the appearance and progressive statement some international competitors. This paper describes and critically analyze the major changes underway in the sector. In the first part, after a brief description of the main actors at international level, we analyze the performance of the sector at a national level and we propose new scenarios determined by the recent introduction of the cmo reform. In the second part of the work trade flows for the main categories are analyzed in detail. The most important statistical sources, represented by fao and eurostat databases, allow us to assess the performance of our country over more than a decade. In addition to market trends, the trade balances and market shares are describe as well. Concerning the evolution of the sector, it is evident that compared to a stable domestic demand for tomato derivatives, the supply seems strongly affected by climatic conditions and by a certain difficulty in planning the production levels of raw material, these imbalances turn in the repeated crises that characterized the decade just ended, and have accelerated the process of refurbishment and especially the processing industry. This process will continue in coming years and will likely be driven by the effects of fruit and vegetable cmo reform. The analysis of foreign trade flows showed significant increases in domestic demand for fresh tomatoes to the eu and all types of products. The growth in domestic consumption has been particularly important for more technological advanced products such as sauces that in the last eight years have doubled the market. For this product category the most important competitor is the Netherlands that in the future may rely on an advantageous position with further comparative advantages. It is also evident that even in relation to fresh tomatoes Holland has the largest market share and so for Italy it is very important to elaborate a specific policy of diversification both in production and trade to avoid the risk of being marginalized on a market that is destined to undergo new changes in the light of the new regulatory framework. The scenario that emerges from the analysis of market shares describes a situation little or nothing comforting for our Country. This scenario is characterized by significant losses in percentage for all Countries and all considered categories. This is further aggravated by the fact that this performance is associated with a simultaneous consumption growth and an increasing international demand. It is also widely believed that in the near future there will be a drop in the price of processing tomatoes as a result of the elimination of subsidies for processing. This price reduction is expected in Italy more consistent than in other competing countries. This can result in reduced product demand by the industries that will eventually affect the area under tomato. The study is divided into two phases: a detailed analysis of the market system?s final meal took place in order to understand the mechanisms of distribution and dissemination of products and a second phase aims to analyze, by administering a questionnaire, trends and the characteristics of consumers of flour. The results of the flour market situation show a fairly conventional situation, even in light of national data, but particularly interesting are the results of the survey which shows a variety of factors of variability in the responses as well as trends in behaviors that make the market for such very complex and structured products. In general, there has been a sustained interest in high quality products in the large distribution chains.
