This study aims to present a view of how the agro-food trade network has evolved between the eu?s Mediterranean partner countries and their neighbors in North Africa and the Near East. To measure the extent of this trade specific indicators are used which are also widely used in economic literature, albeit to analyze trade in sectors unconnected to agro-food. In particular, analyses carried out by applying bilateral trade indices, according to Frankel and Rose (1997) and Traistaru (2004), showed, on the whole, a progressive weakening in the amount of agro-food trade in the period 1996-2010. An analysis of the intensity indices for bilateral trade between partners in the area helped to identify the main factors that regulate commercial relationships. These are especially historical and excolonial relationships, as in the case of France, or else connected with geographical proximity, which results in border trade. Conversely, the Association Agreements and the Stabilization and Association Agreement signed between the EU on the one hand and its Mediterranean partners on the other, have played a only a marginal role in almost all trade in food products, showing that there is no relationship between the positive trend in the amount of trade and the signing and operation of such agreements. Title: Gli scambi commerciali agroalimentari euromediterranei. Contributo allo sviluppo del "Processo di Barcellona: Unione per il Mediterraneo" Abstract: In this study we analyzed trade in agri-food products in Mediterranean countries, included in the Union for the Mediterranean, to identify specialization patterns in the agri-food sector within the Mediterranean basin. Through the rca index (Balassa) it has been possible to assess the growing importance that non European-Union countries are gradually gaining in traditional agri-food sectors, such as fruit and vegetables, and in other agri-food sectors with higher added value, such as processed products, which only a decade earlier, were less competitive. In contrast, the main eu Mediterranean countries show stability in their agri-food specialization model, with a few exceptions mainly concerning products requiring a high degree of manipulation. Then, competitiveness on the European (and Italian) market is analyzed. After an introductory analysis of the dynamics of the Egyptian and Moroccane market shares regarding eu (and Italian) F&V imports over the period 2000-2010 per product category, a Constant Market Share Analysis (cmsa) is developed. This method enables us to further analyze trade performance by splitting up the various imports from Egypt and Morocco into different components (market size, commodity composition, and competitiveness effect). Finally, we provide a discussion on the question of what extent imports from Egypt and Morocco and Italian production might substitute or complement each other and on a discussion on potential price and non-price competitiveness factors. This discussion is further developed with an analysis of third countries? abilities to comply with the Italian market?s food safety requirements. The paper finishes with a discussion on the prospects for North-South cooperation. More specifically, we focused on each Country?s position within the network of international commodity trade relationships, assuming that this influences its Country level competitive advantage. We based this statement on Ronald Burt?s theory of "structural holes" which, if existent within a network, grant to those agents occupying the holes the chance to manage a strategic resource which becomes a competitive advantage. In order to test this hypothesis we applied network analysis to the international virgin olive oil trade network, represented as a weighted, directed network (wdn). An econometric price transmission model suggests that farmers suffer from big retail?s market power in the olive oil sector. Nevertheless, the increasing power of modern distribution companies in the agro-food supply chain depends on several economic, institutional and policy factors. This is a multi-faceted issue which makes us take into account not only economic but also social, policy, psychological and behavioral aspects too. This complexity can be handled using different empirical approaches: among these approaches, we explore the potential benefits of the so-called "economic-political" framework. From this approach a complex empirical estimation of power presence cannot be discounted. Implicazioni per le filiere agroalimentari Abstract: The paper discusses the implications of the emerging consumers behavior model for agri-food price distribution. The motivation of the study lies in the increasing relevance of the so-called basket-shoppers, who are consumers willing to buy multiple categories of products (including food) in a single shopping experience. Their purchasing decisions are based on making the maximum use of the whole basket, regardless of the individual products which go into it. This social change has prompted adaptations in the retail industry and the emergence of strategies based on one-stop-shops and category management. Such strategies focus on the joint profit maximization of the contents of the consumer?s entire basket, without considering the margins on individual products. The paper develops a simple theoretical model to describe the implications of such adaptation on agri-food price trends. In particular, the paper shows that if the retail industry consists of firms adopting category management techniques, food prices are less elastic and less correlated to the prices of agricultural products than they would be in the absence of such practices. Also, the model shows that agricultural price volatility increases and the margin on goods with inelastic demand (such as food) increases. Because of this, it is more and more important to understand the consumer?s choice dynamics in order to develop differentiated marketing, commercial and communication strategies which also make use of different distribution channels. This study was conceived with the aim of analysing the different motives and purchase behaviours of beef consumers in the two main distribution channels: Modern Distribution (md) and specialised shops (butcher shops). The research is based on an internet administered questionnaire to a representative sample of 1500 beef consumers. Within the questionnaire a Visual Choice Experiment was proposed and its results were analysed using a Multinomial Logit Model. The results show different consumer characteristics in the two distribution channels which were analyzed, highlighting how the same product attributes have different meanings and relevance. Such results may supply strategic information for packaging, pricing and general commercialisation strategies to be implemented by the different agents in the distribution sector. Abstract: The authors suggest that the extent of fraudulent seafood sales reported in recent years is, in some way, correlated to the questions regarding Italian commercial fishnaming- policy. However, given the scarcity of data and studies, the work is necessarily exploratory in nature, focusing on three main issues: the policy framework for seafood-labeling, the evolution of lists of trade names for fish species, and the extent, as well as the different types, of fraudulent sales recorded. From the available data the authors believe that the fish-naming system is improving, however, the scarcity of studies aimed at estimating the real amount of diversification in trade names for marine species would seen to be an obstacle to the adoption of a succesful policy. Furthermore, seafood retailers seems to be assuming an important role in fraud management, hence the government should support research to innovative species-detection methods which could be applied directly to retailers? quality insurance systems. This would be a win-win strategy, preventing fraudulent behaviour and reducing the costs attributable to public inspections. Title: Il consumo giovanile di bevande alcoliche: un?indagine su alcuni modelli comportamentali Abstract: In the last decade an increese in of alcoholic beverage consumption outside mealtimes has been observed all over Italy, especially amoung young people over a wide age-range. Although the Italian culinary tradition is closely related to the wine consumption, high levels of market penetration by beer and other alcoholic beverages has been recorded. This study into the main trends in alcoholic beverage consumption within a specific segment of the youth population aims at interpreting the susceptibility of young consumers regarding such products. In particular, the purpose of the study is to identify the motivational choices and patterns of consumption amongst college students concerning to main forms of alcoholic beverage (wine, beer and spirits) through a descriptive analysis of intergroup behavior; for this purpose, the sample has been split according to demographic criteria (sex and age). The consumption of wine take place mainly in the domestic sphere and during meals, while beer consumption is prevalently non-domestic (in pubs and bars) and take place outside mealtimes, although there is some domestic consumption. The other alcoholic beverages follow a specific consumption model in social gatherings outside the home, in pubs and discos in particular. Finally, some hypotheses about decision-making and collective consumption of alcoholic beverages have been tested. The results show widespread consumption of these alcoholic drinks among young people. The data regarding the population sampled seems to indicate that choice and consumption behaviour are both induced by interaction with individuals of one?s own group (social dimension) and by experiential activities. Since then, different ngos and the government have received plant doctor training courses from cabi and are running clinics. By the end of 2011, 166 clinic sessions had been conducted. During this period, a large number of farmers, attracted to plant health advisory services which had never been received in the past, visited these clinics. The government has gradually incorporated this initiative in its regular program. The Plant Protection Directorate (ppd) is now supporting clinics run by different District Agriculture Development Offices (dados). This review of plant clinics in Nepal clearly defines the aims of plant clinics to fill the gap between farmers? needs and existing plant health services being provided by public and private extension service providers.
