In theory, scholars are seeking a single conceptual framework within which to shape the issue clearly. In this respect, the purpose of the paper is to conduct a preliminary literature review on seaport handling from a supply chain management perspective. Three categories in particular are investigated: actors and services, flows and operations, strategy and value creation. Drawing on the findings from the research, several academic and managerial implications are advanced. The purpose of this paper is to provide a new perspective on port supply chain management according to the Service Dominant logic (S-D logic) perspective (Lusch et al., 2010; Lusch, 2011). Thus, the concepts of service, value co-creation, value propositions, operant resources, networks, service ecosystems and information technology are explored through a case study approach. A systematic analysis of the current supply chain (SCM) and port-related literature is carried out through the lens of the value co-creation process (actors, resources, actions for practice/service development and value). Drawing from the Service Dominant Logic perspective (Vargo and Lusch, 2008; Vargo, 2008; Gummesson et al., 2010) and the Service Science, this paper offers a more complete understanding of SCM in an innovative way which potentially lead to co-create value. The study takes a qualitative approach adopting a case study (Yin, 2003) to understand and explain the role of S-D Logic in the conceptualization of port supply chain management. The adoption of S-D logic perspective to port supply chain management enables identifying a system of value co-creation and competitiveness development, individualized according to the key stakeholders involved and the purpose it is created for. As this paper demonstrates, the port supply chain is re-conceptualized as a network of service systems each representing distinct (mostly operant) resource according to the service-dominant logic perspective (Lusch and Vargo, 2006). Hence, the main practical implication of this paper is the definition of a value co-creation process as a suitable perspective to develop ports? competitiveness. The use of the model of S-D logic enables to design a comprehensive framework which allows planning the creation of competitive supply chains. The study represents a first attempt to analyse relations between port supply chain management according to the S-D logic perspective. This enables a more rigorous and comprehensive approach to understand ports? competitiveness development. A study on the automotive sector Abstract: Port logistics has been gaining in modern, connected and globalized economies an ever more intense importance, being characterized, in particular, for the management of services with an ever greater added value. Of course, this wealth creation, in a vision that is largely socio-economic, impacts also the issue of sustainability, which is made even more complex by the interaction along the chain/constellation/network with many other actors and services, constituting almost one flow of activity (according to a Service Dominant Logic perspective). This study aims at examining the issue of sustainability in port logistics, making emerge its multidimensionality and therefore proposing a methodology for its analysis and management. The theoretical framework has been applied to the automotive sector specifically, by virtue firstly of its economic relevance in the global logistics flows, and secondly of its environmental impact in terms of port and back-port. Its methodological application allows to qualify, even though with the inevitable sensitivity/discretion of the individual governance subject, the different criticalities of the sustainability as regards macroactivities and micro-operations of port logistics for the automotive sector. The analysis, so engineered, allows not only to handle a greater social responsibility along the chain/constellation/network of the automotive port logistics, but also, in the perspective of the Business Relational View (BRV), to govern a wider competitiveness in the global competition among port logistic corridors. Mediterranean port logistic competitiveness ability gains a new importance. The port logistics system of Campania represents a good example of it. Considering that all this opens up a new horizon of competition chances for Campania?s port system, we ask ourselves which kind of relationship could exist between a port system, its logistic efficiency and its geographic location. Taking into account all that we highlighted till now, is reasonable to ask ourselves if: the geo-strategic location of a territory by itself could be decisive for the port?s competitiveness. Trough a literature review of articles, selected in a Journal Rankings developed by the Institute of Transport and Logistics Studies, a correlation between port competition, a favourable geo-economic position and the infrastructure equipment is theorized. The hypotheses have been validated by analysing the case of the port logistics system of the Port of Naples. The results show that neither positive correspondence between geographic position and port competition exist. The second one seems to be more directly interconnected to the infrastructure equipment, in particular to the dry port logistics one. In the discussion of the results, we ascertained that a favorable geo-economic position, although potentially a competitive factor is not a determining one. It is more important to have a range of efficient logistical port infrastructure. It is very important to have an efficient logistical port infrastructure. It is a key factor for country competitiveness, as evidenced by the comparison with other international port contexts. These need a deeper understanding, even in relation to the potential implications (managerial, economic, social) that could derive from this. Theoretical and practical implications of these results have been argued, as well as the importance of some competitive factors as public policies and port governance. Even if the hypothesis has been tested on a significant case study, we are aware that this work can be further enhanced by extending the survey to a larger sample of cases, as well as making use of a comparative analysis between Italian and international port systems. The study represents a first attempt to analyse relations between logistical port infrastructure, country competitiveness and geographic position. In conclusion, it would be interesting to consider even port governance among the competitive factors, as it uses public and private financial resources and often decides on their final use. The scientific literature is consistent in conceiving dry-ports as strategic entities to enhance sea-ports? competitiveness. However, the real contribution of dry-ports to the improvement of sea-ports performance is still poorly examined. To concur in filling such a theoretical and empirical gap, the present study shows a brief literature review about the dry-port concept, which pays particular attention to the role of dry-ports in enhancing the effectiveness of the maritime supply chain. Drawing from the findings of this literature review, an exploratory analysis of Italian dry-ports is depicted. This study suggests that the importance of dry-ports in improving both the competitiveness and the attractiveness of Italian sea-ports is widely overlooked. From this standpoint, Port Authorities are incited to consider dry-ports as strategically relevant within their policies and strategies, thus revisiting their traditional managerial approach which mainly neglects the role of inland terminals.
