Industrial plant construction in developing countries (1950s-1970s) Abstract: The Italian construction industry has become a significant player in the global building sector despite a historical delay in the internationalization of its companies. To analyse this paradox, an interpretative scheme is proposed based on three main variables (political, financial and organizational). Following a previous study on private overseas Italian initiatives and resorting to unpublished archival sources, this paper scrutinises the experience of the two largest Italian public holding companies, Istituto per la ricostruzione industriale (IRI) and Ente nazionale idrocarburi (ENI). In doing so, it provides a fruitful vantage point for identifying long-term roots that help explain the importance of foreign markets for the Italian building industry today. La commercializzazione nelle campagne medievali (Arona, secoli XI-XV) Abstract: This article reconstructs the long-term development of the rural market of Arona, on Lake Maggiore, from the eleventh to the fifteenth century, drawing on monastic charters, statutes, toll registers, tax-farming contracts, and notarial records. It shows how an early fair-based and partly urban-oriented marketplace, controlled by the monastery of Saints Felino and Gratiniano, evolved during the fourteenth and fifteenth centuries into a regular weekly market integrated into dense regional networks. Growth was driven less by Milanese merchants or long-distance trade than by rural producers, traders, and local elites, who also managed toll revenues and reinvested profits locally. The case highlights both continuity in commercial expansion and a major shift from urban-centred exchanges to horizontal rural connections, questioning simple links between market growth, toll reduction, and the number of newly founded markets. Schio e la Pedemontana vicentina tra medioevo ed et? moderna (XV-XVIII sec.) Abstract: The paper aims at observing the development of the manufacturing sector in Schio (especially wool and silk manufacturing) on the long run. It will be based mainly on the enumeration and description of the productive structures in the estimi (fiscal surveys) produced by the local authorities. We will also outline the characteristics of some economic players between sixteenth and seventeenth centuries, underlying the fields of investment and the connections with the urban families. The particularity of the case study will allow us to discuss the concept of economic ?periphery? and ?centre? ? the latest often identified with the cities, where capitals, know-how and innovations were gathered. The case study of Schio shows the complexity of such definitions and, mainly, the importance of focusing on the networks and of the relationships between various areas and players. Il mercato di Sal? e la Riviera del Garda fra Tre e Quattrocento Abstract: This article examines the rise of Sal? as the principal market centre of the Riviera del Garda between the fourteenth and fifteenth centuries. Drawing on statutes, fiscal records, notarial documents, and institutional sources, it reconstructs the growth of the weekly market, the role of local and immigrant entrepreneurs, and the connections linking the Garda area to Lombardy, the Alpine regions, and Venice. The study shows that Sal??s commercial expansion strengthened its political centrality and attracted credit, trade, and professional services, but did not produce a fully hierarchical regional economy. Manufacturing remained distributed among specialised local centres, while Maderno and, increasingly, Desenzano competed with Sal? for administrative and commercial primacy. The case therefore highlights both the integrating force and the limits of a late medieval rural market. Drawing on customs and fiscal records from Conegliano, Upper Friuli, and Padua, it examines low-quality woollen cloth, iron, steel, and metalware through database and GIS analysis. The evidence challenges the assumption that fragmented taxation confined low-value, bulky goods to local markets. These commodities moved across interregional networks despite multiple duties and inefficient transport. Their competitiveness depended less on fiscal harmonization than on strong demand, complementary regional specialization, merchant intermediation, and the compression of labour and production costs. The study argues that integrated economic spaces could develop around, rather than in spite of, segmented fiscal systems.
