Starting from the legal framework, this paper aims to analyse the performance measurement systems adopted in the investigated companies (LPT firms operating in Lombardy and Abruzzi) and to compare these systems with the set of performance indicators proposed both by academics and practitioners, according to an international perspective, of business management for the organizations operating in the sector. The results obtained suggests the presence of an ongoing reform process in which Italian LPT firms seem too far to able to "manage the performance". Even the same concept of performance seem vague, not adequately considered, and partially unknown. Hence, after the "legislative reform" we are still waiting for the "cultural reform". The authors analyse the events planned on the cruise ships stopped at the quay (cruise events on ship berthing) and the events organized on the terminal infrastructures (cruise events on terminal). In the last years, the events planned on the terminals are significantly increasing, but their management is still designed separately from the passenger flows. These events might be a strategic tool to support the promotional activities of the cruising and the AIS and management control could play a key role in the cooperation between terminal concessionaires and cruise companies in the cruise events management process. This is an exploratory study conducted through a qualitative approach analysing two terminal concessionaires in the Italian context. It provides a set of key performance indicators to support the management, to control and coordinate the cruise event processes described and to gather data on the efficiency and effectiveness of the "new events" promoted by the concessionaires. Alcuni spunti di riflessione dopo le recenti esperienze in Italia Abstract: Since the acquisition of a scientific status on the part of all specific disciplines, and all along their evolution, the topic of how to formulate a clear definition of scientific "production" and "productivity" has not only been a "technical" issue, given also the socio-cultural influences of the time. This is even more difficult in the humanities and socio- economic sciences. Moreover, the role and use of scientific journals are to be considered, currently representing in many areas of research the main vehicle for the transmission of results. In business disciplines, this function has become such only recently and, if considered in absolute terms, it is likely to harm a healthy and pluralistic development of research in socio-economic sciences, even as for presentation methodologies. On the basis of these elements, the paper aims firstly at discussing what happened in the first experience of mass evaluation of the research through the VQR (for structures) and the ANVUR parameters for individual scientific qualification, then at formulating possible solutions to overcome some serious issues that emerged in the process. The four Countries are: United Kingdom, Australia, France and Spain. The key features of the above mentioned systems are discussed, including: the research quality assessment criteria, the reference to international research quality standards, the impact and relevance of the research outside the academia, the consistency of the scientific researcher?s outputs with the scientific discipline and with the hosting institution?s strategy and activities. The paper concludes with a direct comparison with the Italian system and with some possible proposals for improving the current Italian scientific research assessment framework.
