The strengthened attention to-wards social and environmental issues has pushed firms to place sustainability concerns at the top of their strategic agendas, progressively conforming business, organizational, and governance models. The assumption that a cause-and-effect process links the economic growth of firms with the welfare external environment, has involved scholars and practitioners to increase both financial and non-financial disclosure to improve the engagement with their stakeholders. Through multidimensional systems, firms engage to seize the value creation, in its various forms and configurations, as well as the action of various factors. Moreover, the achievement of international Sustainable Development Goals requires the joint collaboration of scholars, practitioners, and regulation authorities. The academic debate on these themes has determined progressive verticalization on topics by extensively offering different paradigms and interpretations of sustainability in terms of theories, methodologies, approaches, and outcomes. The contributions of this issue of Management Control authoritatively enrich this debate. The volume provides the readers with a multi-faceted perspective on sustainability and its im-pact on firms? operations, organizational and governance models, and disclosure. The included papers emphasize the role of sustainability in increasing the firms? value creation process and support an evolution of sustainable business practices and disclosure considering simultaneously the accountability to a wide range of firm?s internal and external actors. In this context, compa-nies have to, on the one hand, manage ESG risks and on the other hand, face the greater information needs required by stakeholders and political policymakers. The management of ESG phenomena and better transparency of information, by companies must integrate ESG factors between metrics and performance man-agement systems. This work aims to identify the drivers that favour the integration of ESG indicators in performance management systems. A panel analysis was per-formed in the period 2018-2021 on a sample of 104 listed Italian companies. The results show that some factors such as environmental sensitivity and the presence of State-Owned Enterprises are factors that could incentivized the integration of ESG metrics. Through content analysis of impact reports and testing on a sample of 100 Italian benefit companies, four hypotheses based on Signalling theory were examined us-ing cross-sectional OLS regression. The findings show a generally moderate level of disclosure in impact reports and a positive impact of board size, gender diversity, and independence. This study en-riches both the literature related to Italian benefit companies and sustainability disclosure. The practical implications suggest that companies aiming to enhance disclosure may benefit from larger administrative structures with increased repre-sentation of women and independent members. Many studies investigated Integrated Thinking and emerging business practices provide interesting in-sights about the integration of the sustainability perspective into planning and control activities. This paper belongs to the field of research that addresses how the sustainability perspective is integrated through decision-making pro-cesses and strategic planning processes, with the aim of investigating the level and method of integration. From a methodological point of view, this study has exploratory purposes and is based on a documental analysis approach (both manual and computerized), which made it possible to identify the key ele-ments that are crucial in the implementation of Integrated Thinking concerning the strategic sphere. The sample consists of 32 Italian companies listed on the Consob list of entities that have published non-financial reports and with an available strategic plan. Results are quite comforting, although greater atten-tion to certain social and environmental issues is desirable. Mapping and clustering literature on the value relevance of comprehensive disclosure Abstract: The paper aims to contribute to understanding the value relevance of compre-hensive disclosure, covering different types of information provided in addi-tion to traditional financial reporting. This research is based on an initial sam-ple of 361 documents available on the Scopus database as of December 2022. The study adopts a bibliometric analysis based on the similarity visualization technique on a final sample of 179 articles using the VOSViewer software, and it also performs a content analysis on a subsample of 49 articles. The study mapped and clustered research networks, providing a systematic literature overview. A steady increase of interest in the topic investigated has been observed in re-cent years, driven by the growing attention investors and other users deserve on the role of extended information in disclosing how the firm creates value. The network analysis reveals the existence of four main research streams re-ferring to the following topics: Intangibles, Intellectual Capital Disclosure (ICD) and corporate reputation; ESG and Sustainability disclosure; Environ-mental disclosure and capital market effects; Integrated Reporting and Value Creation. Results highlight prominent research fields and emerging trends, which calls for in-depth consideration of the value relevance of comprehen-sive disclosure within the academic and political space. This article adds to prior research on the topic investigated, combining quantitative and qualita-tive methods to systematize literature. In contrast to other review publications that rely primarily on specific reporting tools, our study refers to different types of reports, providing a systematic picture of the state of the art and fu-ture directions of literature on the value relevance of non-financial infor-mation. In fact, the use of financial resources, along with the efficiency indicators based on resolution time, is a relevant aspect, from a perspective of both transparen-cy and performance evaluation. In particular, the analysis focuses on all finan-cial data voluntarily published as part of the social reports of Italian Tribunals and Courts of Appeal between 2010 and 2022. The findings highlight areas for improvement in terms of the availability and completeness of quantitative data and the use of qualitative information to clarify the dynamics and determi-nants of outcomes. The study also identifies opportunities for reflection on the content of judicial social reports, thus contributing to the literature on external reporting of the justice system from an accountability perspective. Problematiche e soluzioni metodologiche e organizzative nella sua implementazione per la sostenibilit? ambientale Abstract: The aim of the work is to highlight how the use and the implementation of management control tools determine any effects on environmental sustainabil-ity. The work analyzes how the Life Cycle Costing, which aims to identify the environmental cost generated by the company during its day-to-day activities could, if not adequately implemented, bring distorted effects compared to its original purpose. The research approach is based on the development of a business case suitable for appreciating how Life Cycle Costing, during its use, in the evaluation phase of new investments, can be integrated with the common evaluation methodol-ogies applied in the economic and business doctrine. The work analyzes its effects in the company strategy from an economic and environmental point of view. The work highlights how an approach to Life Cycle Costing can be able to lim-it the environmental impact, if properly implemented and integrated from a methodological and organizational point of view. The work examines the concrete application of Life Cycle Costing, offering suitable solutions for managing environmental costs in line with the company strategy. Braico Title: Un modello sistemico delle relazioni tra azienda, biodiversit? ed ecosistemi per gestire la performance ambientale Abstract: Biodiversity loss and ecosystem collapse are major threats to humankind?s wellbeing and companies are facing increasing attention ? and normative pressure ? to consider their impacts on and dependencies from biodiversity and ecosystems. However, it is not easy to understand the complex relation-ship occurring between business activities, biodiversity, and ecosystems. Therefore, this research constructs a systemic model to comprehend such a re-lationship and breaks it up into simpler and manageable components. The re-search adopts an interventionist methodology in which the researchers under-took a literature review followed by focus groups with experts and companies to co-develop the systemic model. The final model identifies and classifies sixteen types of impacts that companies have on biodiversity grouped into five main drivers: ecosystem use change, over-exploitation, invasive alien species, pollution, and climate change. Moreover, the model identifies and classifies twenty-four ecosystem services grouped into three main categories: provisioning services, maintaining and regulating services, and immaterial and cultural services. This research contributes to management control re-search and practice by proposing a model that could help companies valuing, managing, monitoring, and accounting for a complex phenomenon ? the rela-tionship between companies, biodiversity, and ecosystems ? by breaking it up into simpler, clearer, and more manageable components.
