Title: Industry reallocations in a globalizing economy
Abstract: Industry reallocations in a globalizing economy - We present the main insights from recent developments in New Trade Theory (NTT) on firms? responses to globalisation and their implications for the reallocation of resources across firms and countries. In so doing, we do not want to propose a survey of the major contributions to NTT. We prefer, instead, to propose a simple twocountry partial equilibrium model that highlights the key features of NTT while bypassing most of its complexities. Both exports and foreign direct investment (henceforth, FDI) are considered, which makes the model also a useful pedagogical tool. Title: Effetti temporali dei mezzi pubblicitari sulle vendite: evidenze da uno studio italiano
Abstract: Temporal effects of advertising media on sales: evidence from an Italian study by Paolo Boccardelli,Matteo De Angelis. This paper focuses on the temporal effects of advertising expenditures on firm sales. Grounding on some econometric models that have been applied to the measure of advertising effectiveness, we provide evidence that the extent to which advertising investments display their effect over time varies with the goals of the advertising itself. In this respect, we distinguish between informative and persuasive advertising, and analyze whether these two types differ in the magnitude of their carry-over effect on sales. We find that a total aggregate carry-over effect of advertising expenditures exists, and, importantly, we show that the two different categories of advertising have different lagged effects on sales. In particular, persuasive advertising has a more persistent effect than informative advertising. This analysis has been conducted considering both current and past investments in each of the two categories. Empirical analysis has used 72 monthly observations from an Italian service firm covering the 2001-2006 period. Jel Classification: M37 Advertising

Title: Effetti economici dell'innovazione tecnologica: un'analisi panel
Abstract: Effetti economici dell'innovazione tecnologica: un'analisi panel - Economic impact of technological innovation: a panel data assessment by Chiara Franzoni e Giampaolo Vitali The hypotheses that innovation is beneficial to firm performance is tested on a new and original sample of micro-level data, stored in panel format. We checked for the effect of innovations in the form of patents, publications and research projects on variations of sales and personnel. Results of the fixed effect estimation show that growth in sales is positively associated to R&D activities accomplished in the two previous years. This effect varies depending on the economic cycle, on the size of the firm, on its sectoral features and on the type of innovative activity. There is however almost no statistically significant impact of innovation activities on the number of workers employed, except for a small positive effect of patents, limited to big companies. Although we cannot distinguish innovative activities concerning new products from those concerning new processes, our results do not support the hypotheses of manpower displacement. Title: La propensione al comportamento imitativo delle imprese: una revisione critica
Abstract: La propensione al comportamento imitativo delle imprese: una revisione critica - What drives imitation among firms? A literature review by Andrea Ordanini, Gaia Rubera, Robert De Fillippi The management literature is paying increasing attention to the phenomena of imitation. However, there are several gaps in understanding what drives firms? imitative behaviours. Furthermore, a fragmented array of disciplinary perspectives has investigated imitation phenomena in the past. This paper reviews the literature on imitation and offers a unifying framework to understand what theory has said about the predictors of imitative behaviours, in terms of purposes, driving forces, and target. At the end of the review, two over-arching rationales for imitation seem to emerge: risk reduction and search for effectiveness. Implications and indications for future research are offered in the final section of the paper. JEL Classification: M100 M200
