Abstract: This paper investigates the funding difficulties of producer cooperatives and the potential risks for their financers. It claims that a cooperative requiring members to underwrite bonds will not automatically cease being an LMF (labour-managed firms), nor run the risk of under-investing. The paper also claims that an LMF-type firm will not necessarily tend to make high-risk investments because the link that binds LMF members to their firm is closer than that between shareholders and capitalist firms. Further claims are advanced and discussed to confute the widespread assumption that LMFs have no way out of their funding difficulties. In fact, no evidence has been provided so far on the role and effectiveness of financial incentives for outward internationalization. The paper aims to close that gap by evaluating the effects of such incentives on firm performance. We develop an empirical analysis using information on the population of Italian firms that received at least an incentive for international growth in the 1996-2008 period. The results of our analysis, after checking for selection bias and causality, show that financial incentives do help younger and smaller companies to increase their productivity, but are less effective in influencing their dimensional growth. Un'analisi empirica Abstract: The paper analyzes a peculiar managerial practice, the delegation of decision authority to employees. The practice could enable firms to leverage the external knowledge developed by communities of users and developers. The work focuses on the interaction between firms doing business with open-source software firms ("OS firms") and the community of OS developers. Specifically, we study the determinants of delegating decisional authority to employees for collaboration between the firm and the OS community. The paper draws on contributions from optimal delegation literature to formulate a number of theoretical hypotheses, which we tested using the data collected on 316 European OS firms. The estimates of a Heckman two-stage probit model indicate that the greater the strategic importance of OS for the firm, the greater the probability of delegation. Conversely, the probability is lower when the firm has accumulated more experience through prior interactions with the community and the room for divergence between the decisions made by employees and the choices that maximize firm?s pay-offs. Abstract: The socio-economic benefits produced by the university and released into the economic system through higher education, research and technology transfer activities have long been recognized as fundamental inputs for industry innovation. More recently, the focus has progressively shifted to the importance of university-industry relations for local development. A review of the relevant literature has enabled the authors to identify a "university research-centric district" (UCRD) model, which combines some of the basic suggestions proposed by the two threads of literature. The challenges and opportunities of the UCRD model are discussed with reference to the Italian context. The recovery expected in 2010 is unlikely to be sufficient to quickly absorb the economic downturns of 2009. Accordingly, a tough selection process is set to take place that will threaten financially fragile firms with closure, despite their know-how. The risk of irreparably losing business expertise across the Italian industrial districts could be averted by the consolidation of small businesses through mergers and acquisitions. Much will also depend on the production location decisions of leader firms. The future of the districts also depends on enhancing the commercial side to enable Italian firms to increase their footprint in fast-growth markets that are also complex and remote. First, data on the population of Italian NTBFs founded since 1984 is used to illustrate the evolution of Italian high-tech industries in terms of the industrial and geographical distribution of both new and closed firms. Second, data from the RITA database is used to analyze the characteristics of Italian NTBFs founded between 2002 and 2007 and compared with data relating to the NTBFs established in the 1996-2001 period. The two analyses enable the author to identify some implications for technology policy geared to Italian NTBFs. Based on 166 face-to-face interviews, the paper provides some evidence on the reasons that led to their decision to become entrepreneurs, their psychological characteristics, and their developed abilities and skills. In addition, the paper also assesses and describes their perceptions of environmental support, market heterogeneity and industry opportunities. Different patterns emerge when entrepreneurs are compared in terms of career paths, organizational affiliation and educational levels.
