Manufacturing firms seeking to diversify their core business by adding services to bolster the product offering soon understand how different it is to develop and provide services compared with exclusively the manufacture and marketing of products. Diversification into services poses new challenges that cannot be mastered using the traditional, manufacturing-oriented management tools. Further, it is one thing to effectively integrate products and services for the domestic market, which itself presents new hurdles, but a completely different ball game when companies that serve the international markets attempt to expand their offering to meet the service needs of foreign clients. What kind of difficulties can the companies expect to come up against? How does a product-related strategy differ from a services-related strategy in the international arena? After reviewing the proposals advanced in the relevant literature, we conducted an empirical analysis of the strategies adopted by a sample basket of Italian manufacturing firms in the Italian leisure boats industry. These powers may be delegated to the key inventors of the acquired firm or centralized by the acquiring firm. The authors develop a theoretical model that integrates the insights offered by the competence- and resource-based views into a framework based on recent developments in delegation theory. The model leads to testable predictions related to the moderating effect of several factors on the relationship between the delegation (or centralization) of decisions and the post-acquisition innovation performance. Specifically, we consider the following factors: i) the reasons behind the acquisition (explorative vs. exploitative); ii) the technological connection between the acquiring and the acquired firms; and iii) the nature of the buyer?s previous acquisition experience. The model has relevant normative implications for the management of the buyer firm relating to the post-acquisition reorganization of the start-up. In particular, the authors explore some developments in the incentive-based approach regarding relational contracts and contracts as "reference points", while the evolution of knowledge-based theories has led us to focus on the interesting implications of the concept of dynamic capabilities. Finally, we investigate some recent attempts to bridge these two main research streams, which have long been considered to clash with rather than complement each other. It underlines the set of peculiarities on aggregate and heterogeneities within single items as well. Starting with the analysis of aggregate official statistics, comparable at the European level, the study continues through the use of an integrated wide set of firms? micro-data in order to provide both a cross-sectional and a longitudinal analysis of the structural dynamics and heterogeneity of the manufacturing system. Particular attention is given on the analysis of the efficiency, focusing on its role in determining the dynamics of the firms. Finally, with regards to the exporters, the paper analyses the factors affecting the export performance during the crisis (2008-2009) and in the subsequent recovery phase. The dataset consists of 1,235 firms that applied for public funding to Finpiemonte S.p.A. We first examined what determinants lead firms to apply for public funding based on a control sample of 1,235 firms who chose not to participate in the program. The results indicate that leveraged firms are more likely to apply for a public subsidy. We then analyzed how Finpiemonte identifies and selects the beneficiary firms. Overall, the results of that analysis point to the selection of firms with lower leverage levels and lower costs, whose projects to be financed have longer lifecycles. Finally, we assess the efficacy of the program on firm performance in the years after the receipt and use of the subsidy. The analysis reveals that subsidized firms suffer from an increase in debt, poorer credit ratings and, while total assets increase, there is no evidence of a positive impact on profitability. Abstract: The electronic communication market is currently in a phase of pure transition as it shifts from obsolete copper network and classical business models to Next Generation Networks (NGN) that use the same infrastructure to enable the widespread distribution of different services (voice, data, TV), thus opening the door to new convergent business models. However, the considerably high cost of building a new fibre network, the unforeseeable payback period, an uncertain regulatory framework and the weak demand outlook make an unconvincing argument for exclusively private investment in NGN deployment. Given the need for direct public intervention, the paper focuses on public-private partnership models (PPP). After a theoretical analysis of PPP to understand both the pitfalls and the advantages of the various types of models, we then analyse several case studies of NGN PPP models adopted by both European and non- European countries. The results of that research and a basic study of the Italian broadband scenario lead the authors to propose a number of policy guidelines for the use of PPP to encourage the building of new broadband networks in Italy. The empirical analysis is based on a new firm-level dataset built by the author through survey interviews. A multiple-choice questionnaire was sent to all the multinational enterprises (MNE) members of the Confindustria Foreign Investors Committee (Comitato Investitori Esteri) in the period September-November 2009. The 77% response rate enabled the author to document the experience of 23 MNE with local affiliates in Italy. Particular focus is placed on the strategic drivers of internationalization and the contribution of inward FDI on local income and the accumulation of capital, technology and human assets. Abstract: The contribution investigates the main features that fuel the international growth of Italian small and medium enterprises (SMEs). The analysis is based on the descriptive statistics harvested from the results of a survey on SMEs that have at least one foreign affiliate carried out in the 2000-2008 period. Above all, the analysis: i) shows that Italian SMEs possess distinctive marketing, organizational and supply chain management competences, and ii) implies a positive relationship between that expertise and the international growth of the SMEs.
