Cause e conseguenze di un paradigma Abstract: The entrance of the market into scholarly publishing has resulted in the emergence of research incentives that approach, in the production model, the traditional business activities. In particular, the norm of the publish or perish that should ensure the production of knowledge, intersects with today commercial strategies that alter the choices of researchers, and, in a sense, the same goals of the research. This paper describes the new forces in play, the changes that have already occurred and the future ones, trying to assess the risks of the new market of academic production for the development of scientific research. Using detailed information on more than five thousand five hundred credit lines to small and medium enterprises (SMEs), we find that innovative activities are positively affected by measures of bank loan availability. Further, estimates also show that firms located in an industrial district have higher probability to be innovative than other firms. Our results support the idea that Italian institutions should undertake and reinforce an economic policy oriented to sustain the access to credit of SMEs as a key element for the growth and development of innovative firms. This inquiry leads to a better understanding of determinants that influence this knowledge and technology exchange. Applying a logit model, we find that, in particular, the foreign subsidiary?s corporate governance structure, its embeddedness in the multinational enterprise?s internal knowledge base, its own technological capacity, the growth of the regional knowledge stock and the regional sectoral diversification are all positively associated with the transfer of knowledge. Subsidiaries? investment motives and the relative weight of the sector of investment in the region?s economy appear to be of less importance. The analysis focuses on European post-transition economies, using the example of five selected Central Eastern European countries and East Germany. We exploit a unique dataset, the IWH FDI Micro database, which contains information on one thousand two hundred forty-five foreign subsidiaries in this region. Title: Heterogeneity and distance. some propositions on how differences across regions, firms and functions affect the role of distance in fdi location decisions Abstract: The idea that distance may hinder cross-border economic activities has a long tradition in both international trade and international business studies. Increasingly, this literature has highlighted the need to consider distance as a multifaceted concept including both spatial and institutional features. In this paper we argue that the complexities of distance factors and their impact on FDIs can be best appreciated when considered across regions, across firms and across functions. We present some developments in extant literature that account for heterogeneity in each of these three directions, and draw some implications for the analysis of FDIs location decisions. Title: Going abroad on regional shoulders: the role of spillovers on the composition of regional exports Abstract: In this paper we examine the existence of destination, industry, and generic export spillovers at the regional level. The empirical analysis is conducted by examining data on export activity of one hundred three Italian NUTS 3 regions, the ten industries with the highest export values in the period 2004-2008, and the fifteen main countries of destination of Italy?s exports. In particular we analyse the decision of export and subsequent flow of trade and we aim to identify the source and quantify the effect of spillovers generated at the regional level by means of a selection-bias corrected panel data model. In order to control for the different territorial effects, three models are estimated. The first one uses all the observations in the period, the second one is estimated using only the regions located in the north-centre of Italy, and the last one is estimated considering the data from the south of Italy. With the inclusion of controls, results show a distinct effect of export industry, destination, and generic spillovers both on the intensive and extensive margins of trade. Spillovers at the start of export activity are stronger when specific by product while are stronger generically when analysing the export flow. We focus on Northern Italy, where fast diffusion of NGAN is currently perceived as a fundamental ingredient for increasing competitiveness and curb the economy?s decline. In particular, this work investigates the widespread market failures characterizing Italian NGAN roll-out, the possible solutions and the technical and financial feasibility of the proposed plans - both private and public. Together, it connects the issue of NGAN financing with the current debate on the efficient and effective usage of EU structural funds in Italy. The most likely predicted scenario is that many semi-urban and rural areas of Northern Italy currently affected by the broadband digital divide will be lacking fast and ultrafast digital connections for a long period: unfortunately, a large part of these areas hosts crucial and export-intensive aggregations of SME and industrial districts. As a results, most of the targets of DAE will be unachievable for Italy. The need of a more courageous and timely public investment agenda emerges. Abstract: In the grocery industry, small local or even national food suppliers are often portrayed as defenseless preys of the large distribution chains that operate in contemporary brick-and-mortar retailing. Publishers have also started to complain about the power exercised by the large digital platforms that control the distribution of online content to final users. The issue of "buyer power" has thus come under the spotlight of policy makers and antitrust authorities in various jurisdictions. In this paper, we review the economic analysis of buyer power and highlight the circumstances under which it might have a detrimental impact on competition. In the competition-oriented perspective, we discuss how buyer power might affect the traditional grocery industry and whether or not it is also relevant in the distribution of digital content on the Internet. We conclude examining the possible scope for public intervention using either the traditional antitrust toolbox or ad hoc legislative provisions on the abuse of economic dependence and unfair trading practices. Abstract: We estimate the standard costs in the Italian local bus transport system by means of a top down approach. Commercial speed results the most important cost driver, while economies of scale are low and only present in the case of small transport operators. Medium sized and large operators exhibit diseconomies of scale. We find a positive correlation between investments in bus fleet and service cost. The model aims at introducing policy criteria for the allocation of public funds earmarked to the local public transit sector among Italian regions. Various policies and instruments can be implemented by TTOs to support the commercialization of academic knowledge. We focus on factors such as TTOs? governance and their internal organization, the mission/ strategy underlying their activities, and the national and specific constrains under which they work to better understand the role of TTOs and the role of universities as facilitators (or inhibitors) of academic entrepreneurship. Using the data from a survey developed under the FinKT (Financing Knowledge Transfer in Europe) project, we provide evidence on the support that academic, European TTOs offer to academic entrepreneurship using a cross-country lens. To date, there is scant and mixed evidence about USOs and their performance, thus producing a debate about their impact on the economy and society and about the legitimization of policies to support their development. In this paper, we address this gap by providing evidence about the growth strategies and performances of USOs in the Italian context. We analyze the population of nine hundred thirty-five USOs spin-off from Italian public universities since 2000, highlighting potential avenues for future research on this important topic. The paper proposes a managerial approach for technology transfer offices by analyzing the main variables that have an impact on their performance. The results offer highlights on the business models of technology transfer offices, on their organizational model, on their bundle of competences and on their activities. The suggestion for policy makers and practitioners is to overcome the technology push approach and go ahead, by adopting a real technology - marketing perspective.
