Although in media and political language the NIMBY (Not In My Back Yard) acronym is frequently utilized to label and stigmatize individuals and groups who oppose facilitieswith high environmental and social impact, research has shown that genuine NIMBY attitudes are rare. The psychosocial perspective sheds light on the modes through which protesters, citizens, stakeholders, and decision-makers cognitively perceive the events and the other actors involved in the conflict. Specifically, there are distinctive inter-group socio-cognitive processes that are likely to orientate the actors? interactions, such as stereotypes overuse, the erroneous feeling of being surrounded by hostile individuals compensated by the erroneous tendency to believe that many others support the cause , generalized mistrust attitudes, and the inclination to support the public opinion?s dominant views. A close examination of these ordinary socio-cognitive processes brings into the foreground the internal dynamic of the conflict, while also highlighting key-points for conflict management. What this contradiction came from? For example it should came from the citizen's inability in prefiguring any industrial work before its foundation stone is placed; or from their missed involvement in public decision-making processes; or from the compresence of different point of view and different cognitive paradigms in the same community (e.g. technocratic or constructivist) for what different stakeholders hardly understand each other. In very conflictual situations, stakeholders became scepticist about the "others" actions and many bad labels are created in order to discredit the opponents, like "NIMBY" (Not In My BackYard). Even if there isn't a real conflict, the contradiction is due to the fact that many industrial plant achieve the hoped results only at a global level but in small local comunities marginality and depression still remain the same. These conflicts have been promoted by grassroots socioecological movements, through several kinds of public action, often characterized by resistance and disobedience. The paper aims to go beyond the usual interpretations of this kind of conflicts, especially the ones based on the Nimby syndrome, following the world-ecology theoretical perspective. The paper is articulated in four parts. In the first one, it is proposed a theoretical analysis of the urban waste production and management in the capitalist oikeios as a frontier. In the second part a brief history of the waste policy in Campania between 1994 and 2014 is shown, based on certain practices and processes of dispossession and appropriation of nature. The third part focused on an analysis of the observed socioecological conflicts as postcolonial conflicts. Finally, some notes about the relationship between these kind of conflicts and the building of a different oikeios are proposed. The analysis is based on previous empirical research on three cases carried out in Spain (the struggles to defend the Ria?o valley and the Grande river) and Mexico (the struggle against San Nicolas? dam) all of them analysed with techniques of qualitative research. The cases show relevant factors in common: a long-lasting and sizable conflict promoted by citizens committees and environmental associations; the recourse to the inclusive strategy by public institutions, in order to overcome the conflict; the reformulation of the original projects by the proponents taking in account some aspects emerged in the inclusive arenas in order to reduce to some extent the negative externalities for residents. At the same time the cases highly differ as per the characteristics of the inclusive arenas fostered by public institutions and as per the level of legitimization recognized to them by opponents: high in the motorway case and very low in the railway ones.
