Methods and Results In order to measure well-being in Lombardy we used the ISEW (Index of Sustainable Economic Welfare) in the version produced by the New Economics Foundation. The ISEW is an index derived from a series of corrections and amendments to GDP, made with the aim of obtaining a comprehensive measurement which takes into account income distribution, environmental sustainability, and wealth stocks, and is immediately comparable with the indicator of regional income. Economic quantification of the components of the ISEW necessitated the use of discrete methodologies, in particular for determining the shadow prices of resources. The results also depend at least in part on these discretional elements. Over the period studied the ISEW for Lombardy was found to outperform per capita GDP, though this performance was not evenly distributed across all the components considered. Conclusions The analysis shows that economic growth achieved during 2000-2004 was not at the expense of sustainability; on the contrary, the development model looked carefully at the most crucial factors affecting sustainability itself. The study concludes by presenting some considerations on the possible use of this index for monitoring the impacts of regional policies.

Other main objectives are to investigate if people know about abandoned and contaminated sites and if they understand the potential beneficial effects deriving from cleanup and reuse of these sites. Moreover we want to understand if people perceive soil and water contamination and if they consider themselves exposed to environmental risks caused by contaminated sites. Do they support remediation and reuse initiatives? What are their preferred reuse options? Method and Results In order to understand people?s opinions we have administered a questionnaire to the residents in the surroundings of Venice. The questionnaire was selfadministered by the respondents using computers and we collected 400 questionnaires. Conclusions We find that people are very familiar with the problem of contaminated and abandoned sites and they are mainly worried about the effects of contamination on human health and on the general environment. Furthermore, they strongly support future public reuse programs like green parks, cultural and other recreational facilities. They don?t appreciate industrial and other productive reuse alternatives.

This dataset has been collected in years 2006-2007 and previously analysed considering the SERVQUAL method. The idea here is to consider an alternative approach allowing for ordinal qualitative variables. Methods and Results The adopted method is a politomic generalization of Rasch model: the Partial Credit Model. The paper focuses on results regarding a single office, but all other analyses confirm these results: the complete analysis shows that the supplied questionnaire are generally valid identifying some minor issues only. Conclusions The paper concludes with some suggestions to improve the quality of the CSS as the reduction of Likert scale levels, the introduction of "extreme" items (allowing for better measures identification), and, last but not least, the necessity of adoption of a better sample selection method.

The latter is to verify the reliability of the estimate by the comparison of corresponding results with other economic variables. Methods and Results It was applied a regressive model finalized to define the relation between the results of the estimation and other aggregates (employment, added value, income) calculated by the National Institute of Statistics and the above mentioned Tagliacarne Institute. The correlation was generally high and in most cases the statistical tests adopted have confirmed a close interdependence existing between provincial household wealth and respective economic variables. Conclusions Comparing theoretical data derived from the model with actual data, the discrepancies between North and South areas appear considerable. The northern provinces show actual values higher than theoretical ones (especially with regard to financial items), while the southern provinces, generally less developed, present a large proportion of real estate and, on the whole, actual values very low. The conclusion of the research is that it could be utilized for monitoring methods and results derived from the estimate.
