Among italian regions: a supply-demand analysis Abstract: The aim of this work is to investigate University-Industry (U-I) collaborations in biopharmaceuticals applying a supply-demand analysis at a regional level. As the most representative science-based industry, the biopharmaceutical, unlike other high-tech industry, has the vital need to engage in research activities with universities and public research centers to exploit knowledge spillovers, essential to its growth. Using co-publishing as a proxy for U-I linkages we explore through a supply- demand analysis the "market for co-publication" among Italian regions. Moreover, using a dataset constructed for the purpose of the research, we are able to exploit, for the first time, the panel dimension of data to investigate the determinants of U-I collaborations applying probabilistic models over a wide time horizon, which goes from 2001 to 2010. Among the main results, we document: 1) a marked shortage of demand for collaborations coming from firms; 2) heterogeneity among universities? interaction performances; 3) limited collaborations with multinationals, often activated with the country of origin rather than with local branches; 4) positive impact on U-I linkages of geographical proximity, stock of academic staff and agglomeration of firms Classification-JEL: O310, O320, O330, R100 Keywords: Note: Pages:5-33 Volume: 2015/2 Year: 2015 Issue:2 File-URL:http://www.francoangeli.it/riviste/Scheda_Rivista.aspx?IDArticolo=55095&Tipo=Articolo PDF File-Format: text/HTML Handle: RePEc:fan:restre:v:html10.3280/REST2015-002001 Number: 1 Template-type: ReDIF-Article 1.0 Author-Name: Roberta De Santis Author-Name: Alessandra Fasano Author-Name: Nadia Mignolli Author-Name: Anna Villa Title: A primer on city "smartness" measurement Abstract: Despite the unquestionable glamour of the topic, the measurement aspects of smartness are often mistreated in favour of the dissemination of best practices and projects at local level. Until now, nearly all the experiments to measure smartness at local level have produced rankings based on economic, social, environmental and technological infrastructures as outputs. As a matter of fact, outputs derived from city rankings are often highly heterogeneous regarding methodology and objectives. In order to compare the degree of smartness for different local contexts, it is necessary to find a convergence towards a shared measurement system that includes specific local aspects. This paper intends to carry out a theoretical and empirical experiment in order to verify whether some methodological innovations can produce improvements in the measurement of the Italian cities smartness compared to previous experiences Classification-JEL: A13, L90, O18, R12 Keywords: Note: Pages:34-51 Volume: 2015/2 Year: 2015 Issue:2 File-URL:http://www.francoangeli.it/riviste/Scheda_Rivista.aspx?IDArticolo=55096&Tipo=Articolo PDF File-Format: text/HTML Handle: RePEc:fan:restre:v:html10.3280/REST2015-002002 Number: 2 Template-type: ReDIF-Article 1.0 Author-Name: Mirko Menghini Title: Le imprese potenzialmente esportatrici Abstract: Classification-JEL: Keywords: Note: Pages:53-64 Volume: 2015/2 Year: 2015 Issue:2 File-URL:http://www.francoangeli.it/riviste/Scheda_Rivista.aspx?IDArticolo=55097&Tipo=Articolo PDF File-Format: text/HTML Handle: RePEc:fan:restre:v:html10.3280/REST2015-002003 Number: 3
