Le regioni meridionali hanno subito in generale un peggioramento dei loro fondamentali economici, soprattutto per quanto riguarda la crescita del reddito e la disoccupazione. Nello stesso tempo, le differenze in termini di sviluppo socio-economico dell?area si sono accentuate, confermando e rafforzando l?esistenza di "diversi Mezzogiorni" messa in risalto dalla letteratura meridionalista. Lo scopo di questo studio ? quello di fornire un quadro di sintesi della crescente differenziazione dell?Italia meridionale nel periodo di accelerazione del processo di integrazione economica in Europa. The Case of Poland Abstract: In a recent model Markusen and Venables (1999) describe the conditions under which foreign direct investments (FDI) can act as a catalyst for local industrial development. We apply this framework to the case of Poland, allowing for the entry of multinationals in both intermediate and consumption goods industries. We check these hypotheses against empirical evidence, exploring agglomeration patterns of multinational and domestic firms at the regional level, and constructing an econometric model able to measure the interactions between the two classes of firms.Consistent with the theoretical predictions, we find robust evidence for the idea that multinationals may promote local industrial development through the generation of backward and forward linkages. A European Comparison and an in Depth Study for the Netherlands (di Piet Rietveld) - ABSTRACT: This paper addresses the problems related to the preservation of open space in densely populated countries. After dealing with the issue from a European perspective, it continues with a discussion of the Netherlands. As a consequence of the ongoing growth in demand for houses in the Netherlands over recent decades, the fraction of the total surface used for residential purposes has expanded rapidly. The location patterns of new residential construction are the result of two types of forces: government intervention aiming at the preservation of open space via zoning, new towns and ?compact city? policies, and market forces reflecting preferences on the demand side. The main factors influencing the location of residential construction are analysed by means of a statistical analysis. The most significant variables appear to be: the proximity of a location to existing residential areas; location in new towns receiving government support; the accessibility of work places; distances to railway stations and highway exits, and to a lesser extent the accessibility of nature, surface water and recreational areas. One of the objectives of physical planning is the reduction of the growth of travel. Therefore the paper also addresses the issue of the transport impacts of physical planning. The conclusion is that the effects are rather modest, an explanation being that the current spatial pattern -due to the long lifetime of housing- dominates future spatial patterns. Physical planning offers opportunities for changes in travel behaviour, but additional measures are needed to make people actually use these opportunities. Non ? un problema di dimensione ottima della citt?, ma di dimensione "efficiente", che dipende in buona misura da quello che la citt? produce, da come lo produce e da come si relaziona nel pi? vasto insieme del sistema di citt?. Il paradigma della "citt? a rete" riesce a sposare in modo soddisfacente teoria e empiria, a differenza degli altri paradigmi proposti che appaiono, a una lettura attenta, o studi empirici senza substrato teorico, o eleganti studi teorici senza un possibile riscontro empirico. Le considerazioni teoriche e le verifiche empiriche pi? avanzate ci indicano che i vantaggi del cambiamento strutturale possono, ma non devono necessariamente, realizzarsi al crescere della dimensione urbana. La citt? innovativa e ben governata pu? superare i costi della crescente dimensione; la citt? statica e poco lungimirante viene invece facilmente travolta dai costi, ambientali ed economici, della sua crescita.
