Title: Finance and Regional Development: A Survey for Hazardous Times
Abstract: Finance and Regional Development: A Survey for Hazardous Times - This article surveys the contributions to the literature on the relationship between finance and growth and pays especial attention to the regional perspective. The survey reveals that although the main cross-country studies confirm the existence of a causal link between finance and growth, this regional perspective offers more accurate and richer insights into these relationships, because institutional factors are better controlled at this level, and the market definition (regions vs. countries) seems more relevant in illustrating the interaction among households, firms and financial intermediaries. Among the main determinants of these finance/growth connections, the institutional and legal environment and the state of economic development have been shown to be of key importance. The article also considers the lessons to be drawn from that financial crisis and its implications for the relation ship between the financial architecture (at any territorial level) and economic growth.

Title: Common Frameworks for Regional Competitiveness: Insights from a Number of Local Knowledge Economies
Abstract: Common Frameworks for Regional Competitiveness: Insights from a Number of Local Knowledge Economies - In this paper we analyse the innovative capacity of the most productive and most industrialised Italian regions by comparing them with a set of European regions that in the past two decades followed an industrial restructuring path towards knowledgebased sectors, doing so via the formation of a Regional Innovation System. Even though the European benchmarking regions now specialise in high-tech sectors and are characterised by high innovative activity, they share an industrial past based on heavy and traditional industries. In this respect, the two groups of regions are not so different in nature, and comparing them yields strategic insights for the Italian regional transformation process and suggests interesting local policy implications.

Title: Knowledge Capabilities and Regional Growth: an Econometric Analysis for European Developed Regions
Abstract: Knowledge Capabilities and Regional Growth: an Econometric Analysis for European Developed Regions - By means of different econometric techniques, this paper estimates the relationship between the knowledge capabilities (i.e. the extent of R&D activities and higher education) and the GDP per capita growth of European developed regions. Along with structural features and initial income levels, our estimations account for the presence of spatial dependence. We find that regional growth is positively affected by the intensity of R&D and the share of adults with tertiary education. These findings are robust to alternative estimation procedures, as they arise from both OLS regressions with country demeaned variables and ML estimations of different spatial models. Title: A New Approach for Measuring and Analysing Patterns of Regional Economic Growth: Empirical Analysis in Italy
Abstract: A New Approach for Measuring and Analysing Patterns of Regional Economic Growth: Empirical Analysis in Italy - This paper presents a new approach that measures and analyses the economic growth of regions in relation to a macro-system. The primary findings are that southern and central regions of Italy have different spatial patterns and magnitudes of relative economic growth in comparison with the North of Italy. More specifically, the morphology of the growth shows that several regions have a negative disproportionate economic growth (allometry) when compared to the North of Italy. These are important results for policy makers, who should balance these regional inequalities. In particular, economic and industrial policies should boost regional economic development through an increase in regional productivity, which is positively affected by R&D activities, human capital and infrastructures of neighbouring regions.

Title: Modelli ibridi di partnership pubblico-privato nei progetti urbani
Abstract: Modelli ibridi di partnership pubblico-privato nei progetti urbani - Considering PPP in urban projects, project financing and integrated development programs increasingly share a common economic approch and determine relevant issues as far as the relations with the general planning tools are concerned. Thanks to such urban management tools, local administrations can trade land capital gains with investiments in public infrastructures and services otherwise financed by public funds. Both tools, nevertheless, appear to be potentially in contradiction with the urban plans whose radical evolution is then necessary for an effective synergy with the emerging PPP instruments in the urban field.
