Title: The Re-use of Urban Brownfields in Europe: A Law and Economics Analysis
Abstract: Brownfield re-use is considered a fundamental action with which to decrease the demand for land. Before being re-used, contaminated brownfield must be reclaimed so as to attain a level of environmental quality suitable for future use. In this regard, regulatory and economic instruments influence the degree and effectiveness of clean-up interventions. The paper has two aims. The first is to clarify how environmental regulation affects brownfield re-use. The second is to review the principal policy instruments adopted in selected European countries to boost brownfield clean-up and re-use. An overall assessment of existing instruments is given in the conclusions.

Title: The Impact of Contamination on the Industrial Land Market
Abstract: This study examines the impact of contamination on land prices and sales in an industrial district in Baltimore, Maryland. We tracked the sales and selling price of land, known to be contaminated, known to be clean, and suspected of contamination because of its historical uses in one industrial area of about 5,580 acres in southwest Baltimore. The results indicate that after the mid-1990s, contaminated parcels have been selling, and the market has adjusted to contamination by lowering prices. Using an OLS model of land prices, we find parcels adjacent to a contaminated parcel - either known or suspected - sold at a 35% discount, and parcels known to be contaminated or had an historical reason-to-suspect of contamination sold at a 55% discount.

Title: Land Recycling in China and its Implication for the Regional Economy
Abstract: Since 2000, many cities in China have moved their large-scale manufacturing plants from urban to suburban or other less-developed regions. This inter- or intraregional plant relocation not only leads to changes in land use patterns but also affects institutional, socioeconomic, and environmental issues both at the local and regional levels. We call this regional restructuring process land recycling, which creates critical energy, environmental, financial, social, and political implications. Using Beijing to illustrate the impacts of land recycling, we also discuss the land pollution-related changes and their implications for land and environmental policymaking.

Title: Transformation of Urban Mining Brownfields into Green Spaces and Local Housing Market Effects
Abstract: Converting brownfields into green spaces and recreation areas creates a significant community asset. To date, however, remediation efforts have focused mainly on utilizing brownfields as productive properties in order to lessen financial costs and risks. The use of environmental economics has proved beneficial in providing a clear answer in regard to the social value of derelict land redevelopment. Using an illustrative example, the paper demonstrates the use of an expert judgment technique, namely the Fuzzy Delphi Method, which is applied as an alternative to approaches commonly used for the valuation of urban green spaces.

Title: Knowledge About, Importance of, and Attitudes Towards Industrial Brownfield Re-use
Abstract: The aim of this paper is to investigate people?s attitudes towards and knowledge about the remediation and re-use of brownfield sites. In order to understand people?s opinions, we administered a questionnaire to 400 residents in the surroundings of Venice. We applied factor analysis to gain better understanding of the structure underlying the respondents? answers to a set of Likert-scale questions on the possible effects of redeveloping abandoned and contaminated sites. We also conducted a multivariate stepwise regression analysis to define the social structure variables that can best explain people?s attitudes towards environmental issues. Results show that people are mostly motivated by environmental considerations when asked about brownfields reuse.
