Title: A Stated Ranking Experiment to Study Policy Acceptance: The Case of Freight Operators in Rome?s LTZ
Abstract: City logistics require an understanding of a number of issues that are seldom accounted for in current research. Policies may produce unsatisfactory results because behavioural and contextual aspects are not considered. Relevant data is crucial for forecasting the reactions of agents to policy changes. Despite recent methodological advances the development of appropriate survey instruments is still lacking to test policy acceptability. This paper expands and innovates the methodological literature by describing a stated ranking experiment to study freight agent interactive behaviour.

Title: Efficient Versus Non-efficient Stated Choice Designs: A Comparison in a Mode Choice Context
Abstract: This paper evaluates efficiency gains produced by efficient designs to analyze Stated Choice (SC) data. Based on an empirical experiment, conducted in the context of the choice between taking the plane or the new high speed train on the Madrid-Barcelona route, we compare the performance of this design with that of the efficient design obtained through minimization of the D-error, considering different modelling strategies. The results of the analysis demonstrate that substantial gains in the significance level of the parameter estimates could have been attained if the efficient design had been used to analyze SC data.

Title: Commuting Behaviour and Residential Choices by University Students
Abstract: Italian university students often attend a university located in a nearby city, and choose between commuting from their home town and living in the city where the university is located. The aim of this paper is to identify the factors that influence this choice. A conceptual framework is developed and an empirical investigation is performed analysing as driving factors the distance between home town and university town, rental costs, travel time, weekly frequency of attendance, course year in which the student is enrolled, student?s age and family income. According to the results obtained the critical isochrone varies from 65 to 75 km, and the monetary value of one hour of travel time is 13 euros. Finally, the impact of the policies currently implemented by the University of Trieste is analysed.

Title: The Influence of Service Quality Factors in the Preferences Concerning the Use of Car and Bus
Abstract: This paper describes a Stated Preferences experiment to simulate travellers? preferences among different bus services, and between car and bus travel, by taking account of service quality factors. The experiment was designed on the basis of previous studies conducted by the authors on the same research topic. The paper proposes a rating experiment with which to investigate users? preferences among hypothetical bus services characterized by different levels of service quality factors; in addition, the paper reports a choice experiment conducted on each user to investigate how service quality factors affect the choice between bus and private car use. The experimental data were collected by a survey carried out on a sample of passengers travelling by express bus services.

Title: Using Stated Preferences to Forecast the Market Diffusion of Alternative Fuel Vehicles
Abstract: Together with Bass diffusion and, to a lesser extent, Total Cost of Ownership, Stated Preferences are the most popular method used to forecast the future diffusion of electric and alternative fuel vehicles. In this paper, we analyse the merits and limitations of SP compared with other methods. We also review the empirical results provided by SP surveys, and assess their validity for modelling market diffusion. We also propose a metaanalysis- based Synthetic Utility Function that consolidates results across various studies and can be used for simulation purposes in a Discrete Choice Model setting. This approach makes simulation results less dependent on the idiosyncrasies of individual surveys, and is therefore helpful for formulating robust policy recommendations.
