In regard to the globalization of the world economy in terms of the production and trade of traditional goods and services, everyone agrees that lower transport costs will result in greater efficiency. Concerning the development of a brain power society, can we similarly say that lower barriers to communications will increase the creation of knowledge in the long run? In other words, would a paradise of effortless communication be the ideal environment for knowledge creation? In my presentation, I will examine the role of space in the endogenous formation of culture and knowledge creation. In doing so, I will revisit the story of the Tower of Babel and ask whether the expulsion from the paradise of effortless communication was really a punishment or instead a blessing in disguise. La verifica empirica vuole indagare l?influenza che variabili riferibili alla densita e alla concentrazione della rete bancaria, alla qualita del credito e alla produttivita regionale esercitano sul costo dei finanziamenti bancari. I risultati evidenziano in particolare una relazione diretta tra sofferenze su crediti e tassi di interesse, un costo del credito piu elevato in presenza di una crescente concentrazione bancaria e una riduzione dei tassi di interesse nelle regioni in cui e maggiore la presenza di banche locali. By linking trajectories of Land Use and Land Cover (lulc) and LD processes, the paper evaluates degradation ?syndromes? in the past, and develops future scenarios for sustainable land management. Emilia Romagna is a region characterized by major economic transformations reflected in its landscape. By analysing lulc over 54 years, two trajectories were identified and linked to LD ?syndromes?: (i) urban expansion and (ii) abandonment of farmland.
