Microeconometric Evidence from Italy Abstract: This paper assesses the existence of knowledge externalities in the form of creative employment spillovers that affect firms? innovative performances. Drawing on a large sample of Italian manufacturing firms, a knowledge production function augmented with regional creative workforce indicators is estimated. The results show that the regional density of creative employment has a positive effect on firm innovativeness. This effect is particularly marked when considering the core of creative employment, although this is subject to diminishing returns. The higher density of creative professionals influences innovation only after reaching a critical mass. The results also show that the effect of creativity is greater than that of human capital. This econometric model comprises the historic series of house prices from 1970 to 2012 and the historic series of certain macroeconomic variables, defined through the empirical findings of similar studies carried out in an international setting. Comparison between the Italian and American models exhibits a clearly different attitude of demand for real estate in the two countries. Whilst the models developed show a similar behaviour for the variable Gross Domestic Product, which has a direct influence on housing prices, they highlight an opposite attitude for the variables ?inflation? and ?stock price index?. The variable interest rate, which contributes to explaining the variability of the Italian housing prices, has no effect in the American model. For both models, the statistical significance of the functional relationships identified and the logical interpretation of the behavioural and institutional relations, arising from economic theory, confirm the reliability of the results. Le piu aggiornate stime del pil regionale, per intervalli decennali dal 1871 al 1951, ai confini storici e attuali, vengono presentate e discusse: queste consentono di testare modelli di convergenza condizionale, con dati sezionali, che indicano la presenza di effetti fissi negativi sulla crescita delle regioni meridionali. Piu che a fattori geografici o di mercato, gli effetti fissi sembrano riconducibili a una difformita nelle condizioni sociali e istituzionali. In futuro la realizzazione di stime storiche del pil provinciale, per l?eta liberale e fra le due guerre, potra consentire di verificare in maniera piu approfondita, ed eventualmente di perfezionare, il modello interpretativo proposto.
