Un riesame del problema, dopo la "New Value Controversy" Abstract: Has the Marxian concept of economic value an objective foundation? In the light of the "New Value Controversy" which opposed neo-Marxist and Sraffian theorists, the author of this essay, a critical Marxist, reconsiders Marx?s labour theory of value. Attention is paid to the Marxian analysis of capital, value and surplus value. The truthfulness of the crucial but unproven Marxian assumption of equality of new value and living labour is questioned. A matrix model describing the productive structure of a capitalist system is used for this purpose. Marx?s labour theory of value is then examined in relation to the theories of capital and investment, which deal with value in process. Some recent suggestions to improve the reckoning of real costs of production are analysed. A draft of a labour-and-capital theory of value is outlined. And as a measure of value a "monetary expression of value" (MEV) is proposed, instead of the "monetary expression of labour time" (MELT). In this paper it is shown how it was possible to resume the old problem of progressivity, and in particular of the structure of the marginal rates. The problem of progressivity in fact faded away with the emergence of the ordinal theory of utility, until the revival via von Neumann and Harsanyi. The literature following Mirrlees paper has in several way changed the results he obtained, showing that it is possible that a structure with rising marginal rates may be preferred both from an efficient and an redistributive point of view. Positive theory on redistribution and progressivity are discussed, with some observations of the tendency in redistributive role of taxation in the last twenty years. Thornton Abstract: Pareto is ungenerous towards Cournot, even if not as much as Marshall. The author thus goes on and analyses a writing by Pareto (1875) on Thornton, brought to light in 2005. Since in 1875 Pareto does not know Marshall, while he has already in mind the concept of elasticity, the a. deduces that Pareto has no intellectual debt towards Marshall for what concerns the theory of comparative costs developed by Pareto in the Manuale (1906). The a. concludes saying that Pareto recognises all his main intellectual debts, except for Cournot. Baumol and Goldfield?s contrary opinion is due to a linguistic barrier. In Italy, they are currently playing a major role for the financial system and for the economy. They provide credit to individuals and households, as well as capital to small firms from sectors such as agriculture. These banks relate to a cooperative credit network that grants them an adequate level of competitiveness in the market. By effectively implementing democratic principles of governance and by focusing on relationship banking, they foster responsible behaviour, a crucial concept in times of crisis. This paper accounts for both the competitive advantages and the challenges faced by Italian cooperative credit banks. It suggests that a better understanding of their specifics would help to highlight the contribution of a sound cooperation to economics. Finally, it provides policy recommendations for a qualitative supervision of cooperative banks in order to increase the stability of the financial system.
