Retrospectively, we may provide an explanation: the fear of losing their industrial jobs may be stronger than the fear for their health and life. To the extent that the mere participation to the referenda was regarded as a threat to the status quo, they chose to abstain. This, as we have seen, is compatible with the hypotheses that their behavior was governed by a mental map in which there was some room for strategic considerations. They may have solved their huge coordination problem by thinking they were each engaged in a small coordination game. We propose a new concept of coalitional fair allocations and study the relationships with the notions of competitive equilibria. Finally we compare individual and coalitional models. Threshold regression approach Abstract: In this paper we analyse the link between Finance and Growth and, in particular, if this link is variable in respect to changes in the "Macroeconomic Stability". This topic was studied by many authors without any definite conclusion being reached. This paper considers the theoretical and the empirical problem in two ways: first, the evolution of the empirical literature, and a new empirical perspective to analyze that link. The research presented here attempts to answer this question using threshold methodology. It confirms previous analysis in respect to non-linearity of the relationship between finance and growth in international comparisons. The use of two different threshold variables confirms the complexity of this link and also the different mechanisms of transmission that operate inside different groups of countries. The use of the bank?s liquidity reserve ratio as a "stability" indicator suggests that probably the link between wealth and stability is not always enjoyed. This paper identifies two mechanisms by which, according to Nitti, human capital positively affects the economic system. Firstly, education contributes to economic growth because it spurs innovation. The second mechanism has its roots in Classical economic thought: education affects the economic system as it influences people?s behavior by making them wiser. Nitti reinterprets this approach, by establishing a link between human capital and social capital. In his view, education makes people able to collaborate and to hinder antisocial behaviour, such as the corruption and patronage that hampered Italian economic and social development. Finally this paper examines the role of human capital in Nitti?s program for the development of southern Italy. The structure of the classical two-stage oligopoly game with managerial incentives with strategic substitutes (quantity competition) generates a typical "distortion" at equilibrium where quantities turn out to be larger than the Cournot-Nash equilibrium ones. This paper shows that when firm owners? objective functions are defined according to a reciprocal altruism hypothesis, the Cournot outcome of the static game can be achieved despite the two stage structure of the model. This result holds true when the analysis is extended to an N symmetric firms context. Classification-JEL: L13, L20.
