RE:WATERFRONT evaluates theories and results from an interdisciplinary design experience with focus on urban architecture in sustainability discourse. Taking the design teaching of "RE:WATERFRONT: Post-industrial harbor transformation at Frihamnen in Gothenburg, Sweden" as a case study, this book intends to tackle the theme of re-development in urban voids. The aim is to introduce a methodological framework feasible to use when improving and consolidating a design approach oriented towards the concepts of experimentation, sustainability and creativity. Utilizing the transformation of a post-industrial harbor site as the intellectual and operational framework to catalyze speculative inquiries in the era of wicked problems, RE:WATERFRONT demonstrates alternatives to the current design and construction of urban space. The approach can be applied both as a design method in teaching, research and professional practice, as well as a reflection on the relationship between sustainability and architecture. The outcome has bearing on academics, educators, professionals, and policymakers interested in aspects of interdisciplinary sustainable design processes in urban redevelopment.

Per-Johan Dahl is Associate Professor in Architecture at Lund University Department of Architecture and the Built Environment, board member of the Research Institute for Experimental Architecture (RIEAch), and co-founder of smog studio.
Riccardo Pollo is Associate Professor in Architectural Technology at Polytechnic of Turin Department of Architecture and Design. His research activity concerns of sustainable architectural and urban design, architectural design management and quality. Formerly main partner of his own architectural firm.
Francesca Thiébat is Senior Researcher in Architectural Technology at Polytechnic of Turin Department of Architecture and Design. Her research interests focus on design and construction strategies for sustainable buildings and cities. She is co-founder of PAT. architecture, sustainability, urban design.
Carlo Micono, architect and PhD. He is Partner of Ai Studio, an engineering company based in Torino, where he leads the Façade engineering and Sustainability group. He teaches Building Physics at Polytechnic of Turin, Master course of Architecture for the Sustainability Design.
Guido Zanzottera, Energy Engineer, EGE and LEED AP. He is Partner of Ai Studio and coordinator of the Energy Modeling Group within the Sustainability Department. He teaches at Polytechnic of Turin, Master course of Architecture for the Sustainability Design, and at the IED of Turin.


RE:WATERFRONT riporta i risultati di un'esperienza interdisciplinare di progetto urbano sostenibile. Il libro, partendo dal caso studio didattico "RE:WATERFRONT: riqualificazione dell'area post-industriale del porto di Frihamnen a Gothenburg, Svezia", intende affrontare il tema più generale della ri-progettazione dei vuoti urbani. L'obiettivo è quello di tracciare un quadro metodologico per un approccio progettuale orientato ai concetti di sperimentazione, sostenibilità e creatività.
La trasformazione di un sito portuale post-industriale costituisce un quadro teorico e concettuale paradigmatico del confronto tra il progetto urbano e architettonico e le sfide della sostenibilità ambientale. Il testo illustra un approccio alternativo alle pratiche convenzionali del progetto e della costruzione dello spazio della città applicabile sia a livello di ricerca e didattica universitaria sia a livello professionale. Inoltre, lo studio rappresenta una riflessione sul rapporto tra sostenibilità e architettura che ha coinvolto ricercatori, docenti, professionisti e politici interessati ai processi della progettazione interdisciplinare e sostenibile nella riqualificazione urbana.

Carlo Micono, architetto e dottore di ricerca. È partner di Ai Studio, società di ingegneria con sede a Torino, in cui coordina il gruppo che si occupa di Façade engineering e Sostenibilità. È docente a contratto di Fisica dell'Edificio presso il Politecnico di Torino, Corso di Laurea Magistrale in Architettura per il Progetto Sostenibile.
Guido Zanzottera, ingegnere energetico, EGE e LEED AP. È partner di Ai Studio e coordinatore del Gruppo di Modellazione Energetica all'interno del Settore Sostenibilità. Svolge attività di docenza al Politecnico di Torino e presso lo IED di Torino.
