Remarks on models and their truth (di Uskali Mäki) - ABSTRACT: Economic models characteristically appear as false. It is suggested that it may be possible to transform such an appearance of falsehood into truth of, or in, models. Two such ways are distinguished and outlined: [1] A model appears false because the precise truth claim intended when using the model has been mislocated. By carefully relocating the intended truth claim, the claim may indeed be true. [2] A model appears false because one has applied a concept of truth that conceives of truth as independent of our ways of recognising it. Once a concept of truth that makes it recognition-dependent (such as truth as warranted assertability) is adopted, the model may turn out to be true after all. Defending strategy [1] against [2], the essay examines issues related to the concepts of model, truth, isolation, idealisation, locus of truth, functions of falsehood, and persuasiveness.
