The Resilient City (by Lawrence Vale) - ABSTRACT: This paper explores the modern phenomenon of urban resilience - the tendency of cities in the modern era to be rebuilt even after major disasters. It provides an overview of MIT’s Resilient City project, which led to publication of a co-edited book, The Resilient City: How Modern Cities Recover from Disaster. The paper highlights the roles of progress-oriented interpretive narratives that deflect the blame away from the state and look towards a more positive future. Second, it emphasizes the importance of key symbolic gestures that use the reconstruction of the built environment as a kind of proxy for other, more protracted, processes of human recovery. Third, it stresses the role of politics in shaping the direction of redevelopment. The paper concludes by outlining twelve axioms of resilience proposed to hold true across many different types of disaster experience.
