To study maternal representations in a sample of women becoming mother with assisted reproduction. It is our aim to analyse: 1) the content of pregnancy and of being a mother experience; 2) the distribution of maternal representations of the self and the child. Methodology. Sample: 20 italian women aged 28 to 42 years (mean age 35; s.d. 4) expecting her first child were recruited for the present study. Measures: Interview of maternal representations during pregnancy (Ammaniti et al., 1995) have been administred. Results: As to content, infertility is one of the most important themes emerged in the interviews; assisted reproduction influences pregnancy which is experienced more concretely and less emotionally. Moreover, if pregnancy it has been at high risk, our subjects are not able to let themselves enjoy pregnancy; indeed they used defense mechanism to maintain themselves over control.
